Yea just retire as the owner and you can create a coach with that same team.

Yea once you retire your character(which is your owner in this case), it asks you to create a new character. From there you are free to choose a new coach, player or owner.

I suspect we have seen the last patch and the owner mode problems are not going to be patched but if there is a patch to fix this, can I then come out of retirement as the owner or am I permanently the coach?

OT but I would love to see them at the very least address the horrible regression/progression in CFM with a patch but EA will never throw us a bone like that. Want regression improved? Well just give us $60 for Madden 16 and discover something else that's broken

To answer your question, no. I believe once you retire that's all she wrote for that character.
