Borderline cheese (but since we are talking against the CPU . . .), use a heavy dose of traps until the CPU DL is tired, then start kicking it outside.

Of course, if you happen to be using the Arizona Cardinals, you may just be out of luck . . .

Go into practice mode and pick a run heavy playbook. Then set both the O and the D to 'random plays'. Spend as much time as you can getting used to a running style that works for you.

Also, if you are running verse a really good defensive linemen (Ngata, Watt etc.) in real life you may want to run at them, in Madden, RUN AWAY! They will continuously shed blockers and hit you in the backfield if you run a HB dive to their side. Unless someone knows of a way to double team a defensive linemen, continue to run away from these monsters.

I'm 3 games into my fourth season, 456 yards with Tre Mason for 6.6 YPC so take it from me. Shotgun runs up the middle really help. He was 3rd in the league in rushing last year. 01 Trap out of any formation is my favorite run play, also option plays really work for me. If you correctly read the defense, 8/10 it works. Be sure to watch for a blitzer too, I missed that read last game, Eric Berry cracked my QB.

Shotgun and pistol runs up the middle. After a while it will start to feel cheesy because 99% of the time you will gain at least 4-5 ypc.
