^^^That is nuts...
It is disagreeable. But what is nuts is the part I bolded. What do you mean usually?

LOL my thoughts exactly. I didn't bother to post my suspicion, but it is a legitimate question.

Sorry, it was rhetorical. I was asking EA what they meant by usually.

I think we get that it is a quote. The nuts part is that the guy you cited actually had to use the word USUALLY, as if there was an UNUSUAL way to rate speed aside from 40 times and correlating metrics thereof.

Re: Good article from ESPN about how Madden ratings r made

I posted this in another thread, but thought that it may pertain here as well:

The one thing I want to know is how this article was presented as fact, yet is PROVEN to be incorrect?

http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/madden/#

Using their % breakdowns for QBs, let's do Russell Wilson from M15. His out-of-box attribute values were as follows, along with the weights from the article:

AWR: 84 (0.20) = 16.80
THP: 93 (0.20) = 18.60
SAC: 87 (0.15) = 13.05
MAC: 83 (0.15) = 12.45
DAC: 89 (0.10) = 8.90
PAC: 91 (0.08) = 7.28
SPD: 86 (0.05) = 4.30
AGI: 90 (0.03) = 2.70
RUN: 87 (0.03) = 2.61
ACC: 92 (0.01) = 0.92

Now, according to the game itself, Wilson's OVR should be a 93 with those attribute values. However, when you add all of them up with the weights from the article applied, you get 87.61 or 87 overall.

Hmmm...that's odd.

OK, well let's try it with MY analysis of how the OVRs work in Madden:

AWR: 84 (0.329) = 27.636
THP: 93 (0.329) = 30.597
SAC: 87 (0.247) = 21.489
MAC: 83 (0.247) = 20.501
DAC: 89 (0.165) = 14.685
PAC: 91 (0.123) = 11.193
SPD: 86 (0.082) = 7.052
AGI: 90 (0.041) = 3.690
RUN: 87 (0.041) = 3.567
ACC: 92 (0.020) = 1.840

Add them all up and you get 142.25. Huh? Oh, did I mention there is a final modifying number applied to all OVR formulas that is unique to each position? For QBs it is -48.284. So let's apply that now.

142.25 + (-48.284) = 93.966.

However, since Madden ROUNDS DOWN, you get 93 OVR.

Well wait, now what about that calculation from the first example with the ratings from the article? Let's just add a minimum of 5.39 to get 93.00. That means that we have to do it for every player then.

Let's test it with a player on the low end of the scale in OVR rating. B.J. Daniels anyone. According to EA, he should be a 62 with the following attributes from the article:

AWR: 39 (0.20) = 7.80
THP: 84 (0.20) = 16.80
SAC: 74 (0.15) = 11.10
MAC: 71 (0.15) = 10.65
DAC: 63 (0.10) = 6.30
PAC: 66 (0.08) = 5.28
SPD: 84 (0.05) = 4.20
AGI: 88 (0.03) = 2.64
RUN: 83 (0.03) = 2.49
ACC: 87 (0.01) = 0.87

Add them all up and you get 68.13 or 68 OVR. Now add in that adjustment like we did with Wilson and we get...73.52??? What??? Something doesn't make sense here.

Do it with my OVR breakdown and you get:

AWR: 39 (0.329) = 12.831
THP: 84 (0.329) = 27.636
SAC: 74 (0.247) = 18.278
MAC: 71 (0.247) = 17.537
DAC: 63 (0.165) = 10.395
PAC: 66 (0.123) = 8.118
SPD: 84 (0.082) = 6.888
AGI: 88 (0.041) = 3.608
RUN: 83 (0.041) = 3.403
ACC: 87 (0.020) = 1.740

Add that all up and we get 110.434. Use my modifier at the end and we get 62.15. Round down and that is the 62 OVR we were looking for.

So, what is going on here? How can that article about how Madden ratings are made be so inaccurate? Did they get bad data or is EA fooling us all by telling us that we are getting a glimpse at the real stuff, but are instead treated to false data?

Any thoughts?
