So if I'm understanding this right you can't tell if someone hits the "play the ball/wr" buttons on defense?

nope. when u watch a replay the player's circle doesn't light up or anything, so you can't tell.

When you play the game you can tell. There is a silver flash that shows over the catch icon when you utilize user input.
