TE Question..

I am curious if playing a TE in the FB position is a good idea or should I stay with a FB who has a lower overall? Essentially, how big of a penalty or difference is there?

Re: TE Question..

I think this is a loaded question with a variety of correct answers.

What is your personnel like? Do you have pass catching TE's (Jimmy Graham type)? Run Blocking third tackle types (think Michael Williams Pats)?

What is your offensive game plan? How do you prefer to play? Run heavy (think Smash mouth)? Pass Heavy (Air it out)?

If you have an offense that likes to air it out and you have a TE that is a great receiver then its a match made in heaven moving him to release from the backfield.

Same for if you have a preferred attack of keeping it on the ground and you have a "third tackle" type TE that gets to run full speed at would-be tacklers on run plays.

My suggestion is decide how you would like your offense to run. Then compare your FB's and TE's to see which ones fit the scheme the best.

In some Cases even using a Larger RB will work as a good fill in for a FB... (think Steven Jackson in Free agency)

Re: TE Question..

I used Craig Stevens at FB a lot in Season One of my TEN franchise and he played great...

His AWR is much higher than the rookie, Fowler...

So he excelled at run blocking, catching passes out of the backfiel, etc.

I even ran it with him a couple times...

On a related note:

Some Fullbacks make excellent TEs...

In an "H Back" system, that position is a "Hybrid" of the two anyway...

Re: TE Question..

I was hearing that TE's placed in the FB position take a huge AWR drop...I should have been clearer in my original post, but I like the answers I have gotten here and they appear to prove the previous rumors as being wrong..

Seems fitting to put a TE at FB since the NFL has been going away from the true FB player...We will probably not see another Alstott or Kuhn...

Re: TE Question..

In general, I'm not seeing the kinds of major AWR hits for playing "out of position" this year, as in the past...

Re: TE Question..

I will often drafts TE's and move them to FB at position switch before the season starts. They are fast usually have better run blocking

Re: TE Question..

In a online CFM with friends, I had Lee Smith as my highest OVR TE. He had brick hands, but was a darn good run blocker. I think in the 80s. I tried using him as a run blocking TE in my offense, but he had a bigger impact when I moved him to FB.
