A legacy issue since Madden 93?

I'll probably do a more thorough review in game impression thread. This is one issue that doesn't get a lot of attention. I wan't to know if its just the Titans because it's related to ratings.

Madden 93 allowed you to pick personnel packages before formations on offense. I think it was just normal, fast, hands, special teams and big. Modern Madden needs something like this on offense and defense. Madden 2018 is specialist and personnel weak on offense and defense. This is especially true online when you don't have as much time to sub and auto subs arent set. Auto Subs didnt work for certain positions in 17. Havent played offline enough to see if this is still the case.

This issue is more apparent using the Titans because the Titans roster is a mess. The starters have ok ratings, yet any hardcore Titan fan could have done better with the bench and depth chart. I know this because

Fans are talking and they are seeing the same thing.

The starting DT is not in the game. Its not like they just signed him. Woods was on the team last season.

Blackson is still rated too low to warrant minutes even if the game allowed you to rotate.

Madden has Amaro as the second TE and he's going to struggle to make the team. He's a good player who should stick in the league but he might get cut.

Madden has LeShaun Sims* is the 4th CB. He played well as a starter last season and could still beat out Adoree Jackson as a starter. Kalan Reed was a low pick who has barely played meaningful minutes, however if damn good preseason play for two years is worth something he should have an overall above the 50s. Anyone starting a franchise right now would probably cut him in Madden. I can tell you he is going to make the team irl so there is a disconnect. Byard is the number 2 FS behind Cyprien. Huh? Byard and Cyprien are both starters period. Wallace is arguably the third best OLB irl.

The point is that the Titan's defense is too shallow in talent. There are some exceptions. Walden is a proven vet off a productive year and Dodd was a high pick so they have ratings, McCain is arguably overrated. In general depth, especially on defense is underrated so even if the game had refined personnel packages, auto subs that worked and longer sim/ranked games online, it would not give the defense the fatigue advantage that seems to be a move in the NFL.
Maybe it's just the Titans. They play a lot of players on defense especially on the fronts.

Is it just the Titans or is this systemic?

I remember it too and what was even better is if you had to watch your players run off the field as the other group ran on. So if you were in a 2 minute offense and your hands team was already on the field and you accidentally chose your "fast" team, you would be forced to wait as they ran on the field, chewing up valuable clock time. In that era that was a cool "sim" feature for sure.

That Madden 93 feature would fit better in today's NFL. Back in the 90s you were more likely to have a stud FB so you typically avoided playing backup RBs, Lineman and TEs playing FB in fast, big and hands packages but in today's NFL you see it all the time. The same is true with most positions on defense. I think a good solution would be multiple depth charts.
