Can someone explain Salary Cap Penalty to me?

If I traded Russell Wilson for another player, let's say someone like Mitchell Trubisky, do I get a penalty hit next year?

If you trade/cut a player the bonus portion of the total contract remaining is the penalty. The bonus is split evenly among the total years of the contract.

Thank you. That's what I figured. Last year I went crazy, signed all the top free agents and traded them for draft picks only to have a huge negative on my team funds. I thought that was a glitch or something.
