I think this is right, I usually tried to tell myself "if they stay, I stay" so if the defender is staying in place (keyed on the qb" then I keep my finger on the x/a button to hand it off.

I haven't done it much this year yet.

I just tested it in practice and it holds true, but any time I kept it I was just getting drilled. The read defender would be crashing to the HB, Mariota would keep, and the defender would turn and catch Mariota almost immediately. I only tested two different option formations so it could have been bad luck but it was pretty consistent.
