The Show by a landslide. Madden took a huge leap forward this year but it's still far away from The Show's presentation, atmosphere and commentary. It almost feels like you're watching a game on tv. And the amount of little details in The Show is just ridiculous. Combine all that that with great graphics and gameplay and you've got one damn fine game.

NBA 2K8 is the greatest sports game I've ever played. All the teams actually play like their counterparts...ie the Suns run on you, the Spurs slow it down, etc... If Madden could do that I would be in heaven.
me and my brother was arguing over this the other day. at the beginning of this year i would have chose 2k8, but after playing a whole season in both games, THE SHOW gets the win for me. NBA 2K8 is a great game no doubt and clearly the best basketball game ever made to date i believe.

but THE SHOW is just pure baseball. its so authentic it just blows ur mind!

Re: MLB 08 the Show vs. Madden 09

The Show is awesome for single games. The franchise mode SUCKS! Players (just like Madden) don't progress and get better. The AI lineups are awful. Everything comes down to franchise mode for me, and right now pretty much all the sports games are putting zero effort in to it.

"Next Gen" seems to be solely about making better graphics not better games.

Old Madden had a kick *** franchise mode, High Heat baseball had a fun and deep franchise mode.

Enough new "gimmicks" (IQ challenge, superstar etc etc). Get down to the fundamentals - Game play.............graphics...single season, franchise... once you get all those areas shored up, then ad fluff.

My biggest problem with The Show is the game play, it's still last-gen. It's been the same game for 3-4 years in a row now, I own both the PS2 and PS3 version of 08 and the game play is exactly the same. Plus it remains a singles-fest for me. Many people say they get great hit variety but regardless of sliders I have never gotten great hit variety over the years.

Both 2K basketball titles (it's really a preference which you like more, pro or college) are enormous leaps in game play compared to PS2/Xbox versions of older 2K basketball games. Show diehards always counter this fact with the old, "If it ain't broke don't fix it line" but I don't buy it. It's not broke but it needs a pretty substantial face lift, IMO.

Yup, every hit is either a single or a homerun...But it's also always the same time of singles...There's no bloop singles or Texas leaguers. Doubles and triple are preety rare too. Balls just don't go to gaps..

I'm not saying you're wrong but what exactly is next-gen gameplay? The only sports game I see making the jump to next-gen is EA's NHL series. Mind you I didn't play NBA too much on the last-gen so I won't comment on that but FIFA, PES, both MLB's and of course Madden have stayed pretty much the same. Some even struggled to rise to the level they were on PS2/Xbox.

Like I said in my previous post, look at 2K basketball games. Play CH2K8 for 360 and then play it for regular Xbox. The Xbox version is unplayable after after playing the 360 version (I know, I sold my 360 and tried to start a dynasty on regular Xbox and couldn't even finish one half). It's staggering the increased amount of control and moves (dribbling, from the triple threat, in the post, etc). You can do so much more on the court.

Meanwhile, The Show on PS2 literally has the exact same gameplay as it does on the PS3, just far inferior graphics obviously.

I agree with your point on Madden and other games, most feel very similar to their last-gen versions which is a big reason why so many people are pissed at the sports game industry right now, and hell some games (NCAA09) actually have gamers begging for last-gen gameplay which is even more sad. I haven't a hockey game in probably 15 years so I can't comment on the NHL series you mentioned but I'm guessing it's a huge improvement over the Xbox/PS2 version of itself.
