NFL Fever 2004's innovative passing"read and lead"Madden should adopt sumthin similar

I really think playing the QB position and passing should involve more skill then just hitting a button. Madden came up with the vision cone which I liked, but it was rejected because the majority of madden players just want to run backwards simply hit a button to simulate being a QB.
Another complaint was people didn't like the cone on the field cause it looked unrealistic, this complaint didn't make much sense either because there are dozens of unrealistic overlays and other things if football videogames to simulate things on a virtual playing field vs real life.

The vision cone was rejected, the majority of madden gamers rejoiced as playing QB devolved back to the complexity of 8-bit football of smashing the button of the best target.

As the madden franchise continued to reign supreme and NFL2k was coming into its own, a lesser known and lesser appreciated franchise designed a very innovative Quarterback throwing system.

Below are a couple descriptions of how the "read and lead" system works and also a youtube video of a guy trying to show and explain it.

"Read & Lead: This passing mode is the most advanced and will require more skill and timing from the players than the other modes of passing. Run & Lead takes the Trigger-Passing mode and adds the ability to control where in relation to the passing route you wish to deliver the ball. After selecting the desired receiver, a target circle will appear around that receiver. You then use the right analog stick to control the movement of this target. This gives you as the quarterback the versatility to alter the passing route by determining where the ball will be thrown. If you want to give the receiver a lot of lead, you can move the circle far ahead of them on their route, allowing them to catch up to the ball and hopefully break free of the defender. You could also move the circle to either side or pull the circle back from the receiver in the hopes of forcing a receiver in tight coverage to break free. To deliver the ball you then use the trigger, as you would in Trigger-Passing. Ideally, more skilled players will enjoy this mode because it gives them more flexibility at reading the defense and making adjustments on the fly, but most may find this mode too much handwork in a limited amount of time. For the hardest of the hardcore, Read & Lead is the mode to nail down, but for the average player, One-Button passing gets the job done sufficiently.

"One of the most impressive and innovative features in 2004 is "read and lead" passing. The new passing mode allows for a more realistic football experience. "Read and lead" passing works by putting the quarterback's view directly behind the center so the player can pick and choose his or her passes before going deep.

When a gamer finally selects the receiver, getting the ball to him isn't so easy. Instead of throwing the ball to a receiver, NFL Fever 2004 forces the player to pass the ball to the spot on the field where he or she predicts the receiver will be. Locking onto a receiver and then moving an icon around his general position is how this is done. "Read and lead" passing is tough, but it can be turned on and off in order to accommodate players who suck

Btw the read and lead passing system also takes into factor the skill of the quarterback by adjust how precise the control of the passing icon is. Madden has failed time and again to simulate a quarterback skill level when that quaterback is control by a human user, another major fault of madden retroactive approach to passing.

I really hope EA tries to come up with a more involved passing system, because right now the passing system is just the same as it was when I played madden 92 on supernes. Does madden even still have touch passing anymore? I remember in past maddens when you could actual adjust touch passing.

Of course EA would have to accommodate the casual gamers and other gamers who want one button passing. This could be done by implemented the advanced passing into higher difficulty levels.

I forgot ALL about this feature. I use to play NFL Fever and I owned Fever 04 and yeah, this was an amazingly cool thing.

It's just a shame that EA got the license because this shows you how much competition kept innovation alive. Every year 2K,Madden and Fever were bringing the goods because they were competing for the same audience.

Hopefully the NFL rethinks it when this contract is up. It's better for their business IMO.

No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.

A while back Ian made a statement to the effect that his long term vision for Madden was to produce a game in which a person who knew football but wasn't a gamer should expect to defeat a gamer with little or no football knowledge.

R&L, with it's emphasis on video gaming skills (using one stick to move the qb and the other to move a passing icon) is imo incompatible with that goal.

The camera change and the on field crosshair graphic do not fit in the direction Madden is headed.

Max passing can work by using the left stick only. 3 button presses to pass the ball is not making Madden a better game IMO.
