Even if the world ends Brett Favre will unretire from death and keep on playing one more year for eternity and forever. As a note I don't blame ea for a bad game just for the previous regime that Was in charge.

Maybe they weren't predicting the end of the world, maybe the end of Madden, hmmm... makes you think.

Re: What happens in 2012?

Not sure about 2012, but it will be interesting to see what Madden 2011 brings to the table to combat backbreaker's release. We saw Madden '08 add 'ability icons' to combat the 'star / attribute' mode of APF2K8, then we saw ProTak introduced last year to combat the gang tackling ability of BackBreaker. IMHO we are going to see new camera work and controls introduced in this rev of Madden, as well as new locomotion to combat BackBreaker's release.

Like you said, competition breeds innovation, or at least a keep up with the Jone's attitude at EA Sports.

It's my understanding that the NFL is making more money per year under the current exclusive deal than it did when it had multiple publishers making NFL games.

EDIT: here's a post from OS member DrJones (who worked at EA until the Great Purge a few years ago) that explains this better than I can:

The current EA deal with the NFL pays them between $60M-$70M per year, regardless of units sold.

Re: What happens in 2012?

It heavily depends on the outcome of the American Needle case currently before the Supreme Court (the opinion should be published this summer). If the SCOTUS declares that sports leagues are not "single entities" for Anti-trust purposes, it opens the door for 2K or some other publisher to attack the exclusivity deal in federal court.
