I know, but the LB or DE will often stop or set up right in the throwing lane between the QB/HB. The contain guys aren't going to stop the HB, they're there to try and swat the pass.

Yeah, because the CB backs up to follow the wideout on his side who runs a route right past him. Once the wideout leaves his zone, the DB returns to his spot, but usually the QB throws to the HB before he returns to his spot. Highlighting the halfback seems to make this happen faster, as the DB sees the highlighted player approaching his zone and breaks off sooner.

Yes, but if the other guy knows what he's doing, he can get the ball to the flats before the LB/DE even have time to set up in the throwing lane.

Contains are null and void if the guy throwing the flat route is quick enough on the trigger.

Again, if the ball comes out quick, the RB is going to be receiving the ball while the CB is way off the line of scrimmage chasing the outside WR downfield.

No one who makes the flats their primary offense is going to be waiting around for the CB to come back to the line of scrimmage before getting the ball out the RB who's wide open in the flats.

This is a general problem with the AI for all flat zones.

The CB's first move is always to chase the WR upfield instead of staying on the line of scrimmage like he's supposed to.

Hence the flats are open all day long against the cover 2 and cover 3 variants that feature the light blue flat zones.

The route is going to the flats and then cuts to the middle.

Just spread ur D-line drop ur DT into a yellow zone, and bring pressure from the outside. Gets him to throw a quick pass and its a pick.
