Rating Categories, What do they do?

Can anyone help me with a list of some ratings categories and what exactly do they mean and what effect do they have in the gameplay? (Im talking Next Gen) There are the obvious, (Speed, Catch, Route Running, etc.), and there are the ones that seem obvious but they are hard to determine what impact exactly they have, and finally what about the not so obvious, like why do we have 6 ratings for blocking? What do they all mean/do? What does Strength mean/do? Do the old Last Gen ratings mean anything on NG?

It anyone can help me with any of these I'll be happy:
Run Block
Pass Block
Jumping
Kick Return
BC Vision
Run Block Str
Run Block FW
Pass BLock Str
Pass Block FW
Awareness
Man Coverage
Zone Coverage

AND if anyone can help with 2 quick questions about Ratings and Franchise mode.

Ive read Awareness has no effect on defense anymore, and if that is true why do some Defensive minded coaches in Franchise award players with an Awareness boast?

Also if A player is one below the weapon limit, for example JaMarcus Russell Has a 94 Throw Accuracy and I hire a coach that adds +3 Throw Acc for QB's and the limit to gain the Weapon is 95 (just guessing, idk what it is off the top of my head) is he treated as a Accurate QB weapon?

Re: Rating Categories, What do they do?

Some guesses, some based on what Ian and Co. has said.

Run Block- Nothing, as far as I know
Pass Block- Nothing, as far as I know
Jumping- Vertical leap, most apparent with receivers and DBs
Kick Return- Ability to catch a kick, pretty much. Avoid muffing punt returns
BC Vision- Ball carrier vision- CPU only, you take over for this attribute
Run Block Str- Power... ability to move a defender once engaged
Run Block FW- Ability to make contact, not get knocked over
Pass BLock Str- Ability to hold up to a bull rush
Pass Block FW- Ability to fend off a finesse move
Awareness- Catch-all for mental aspects of the game.
Man Coverage- Awareness when in man coverage
Zone Coverage- Awareness when in zone coverage

Awareness's effect on defense has been mostly mitigated by Zone Cover, Man Cover, and Play Recognition, but I think it's still there for some other minor checks.

Don't think so, I think it has to be natural.

Margin of error on the kick meter I believe, but don't quote me... considering there doesn't seem to be a potential for "error" on the kick meter at all:P

Thanks for a great reply

If the Run Blocking and Pass Blocking (from Last Gen) mean nothing then why when Olinemen progress at the end of a season you gain in those areas? And why does it seem to have the larger impact on a Lineman's overall?

I don't know. I would assume some of that is being tuned. Or if it isn't, Donny Moore will see this thread, his eyes'll get all big, he'll mutter something under his breath, and work 5 hours OT every night for the next 3 weeks.

Another one that sounds obvious that could be added to that list is Acceleration, but after this last blog I hope they have addressed that.

Imo. Acceleration should be the way more important rating than Speed.

Sure speed is good for those long developing long plays, but acceleration is effective in any and every situation of the football field.

When they say speed kills , they are actually trying to say acceleration kills.

Re: Rating Categories, What do they do?

This maybe off topic but....

I'm really hoping that with Madden '10', I have reason to have a lot more faith in the ratings and scouting reports. I'm kind of a numbers guy, were I could easily get lost for hours checking out stats, ratings and reports, IF I had more faith in them.

If I did have more faith in things like this, the depth of franchise mode would increase tenfold for me. Maybe this sounds silly...but at times I find myself pretending the numbers matter. That seems kind of pathetic.
