The Curl Route...pointless or possible?

I don't run curl routes often, but when I do they work sometimes. The timing of the pass is indeed a huge factor.

Somewhat related, I also am having reasonable success with the deep comeback route (guy runs deep then cuts back and to the sideline diagonally) for the first time since playing on Rookie difficulty in Madden 2001. Having Carson Palmer throwing the Chad Ochocinco is probably a large factor in this, however.

last year it seemed like the best timing was to throw just as your receiver was turning around.

this year it seems like the best time to throw is just before your receiver turns around. (That is to say the ball is already coming at him when he turns around.)

If you notice your receiver in double coverage give up right away and start looking at your backup target. dbl coverage is death w/ this route.

Also, FWIW, I have better succes with the curl where the receiver's about face is angled towards the sideline. I use it to stop the clock and gains of about 5 yds.

I look at the coach diagram to see where my receiver is going to make his cut. On curls, I typically throw the pass about 3 yards before he makes the turn. I also check to see where the defender is, sometimes he's outside and if so I throw the ball inside. If he's inside, I throw it outside. If he's directly behind him, I typically try to throw the ball low.

You don't have to work for EA to think this. Have you considered the possibility that you just aren't good at hitting this route? As others have said, the curl is no longer the automatic completion it was in past maddens, it is certainly possible to complete.

The most success I've had with curls is when I get it against man coverage with no deep safety help. Also if you wait for the receiver to curl you give the defender time to jump the route as the WR will be stopped waiting for your pass. Also the slant broken off into a curl route that the TE runs in a lot of plays is very good against a lot of cover-2 and cover 3 zones as he will often curls and sit right underneath the MIKE LB's zone.

Same for me. I can sometimes get it to work if i get a serious height advantage, but thats not very often

ok, well its good to know others are having troble with it, but the tips on how to do it are much appreciated. I agree, it is very risky, but the timing aspect makes alot of sense.
