Re: Stopping the Tight End?

A big problem is that defenders always allow the TE a clean release. In real life a pass rusher may briefly interfere with the TE or a LB may do something like a jam. Unfortunately in madden the TE always gets to run his route unmolested.

I always manually cover TEs with my LB or safety but sometimes (actually many times) I get humiliated by shake routes. Stick and nod makes me cry

Quoted for truth.

Best way I've found to stop TE is to double team with off man coverage to give them the underneath routes early, then mix in a cover 3 FS blitz later once they start getting pass happy and manual the FS to the flats to try to jump the shorter routes. Essentially showing Cover 3 but really going Cover 6 after the snap to overload the side where the TE is.

Have to mix up coverage to take the TE out of the game. If you man up the whole game then you're asking for trouble. I still prefer Man most of the game with zone blitzes mixed in to catch them when they start going to the "man beater" routes.

Yeah if I am playing a human opponent I spend most of the early game in man coverage and once they get comfortable I sneak in zones.
It works well in conjunction with zero-blitzes too. Blitz heavy in 1st half and audible to show blitz when you do it. Then after their internal clock is in blitz mode give them the same look while dropping everyone into coverage. 3-4 cover 2 that only rushes 3 or even 9 velcro has gotten me quite a few picks.

But it all depends on what they are doing. Most people that abuse the TE (or any player for that matter) usually have only a few routes they run.

I tried man, zone, doubling up the TE with a LB and safety. He used him in so many different ways, and when I finally thought I had him stopped he would hit his wide receiver on an out route or scramble with Schaub. I prefer to use a DE when I play as i feel like I can get to the QB and could use some tips on using a safety or LB, as it seems when I do they exploit me in a different way as I don't have the stick skills.

Thank you.
According to your post, you have answered your own question. Against most good offensive teams, you can't stop the entire offense all the time... you want to just slow them down. You want to stop the tight end? Keep doing what you just did when you "thought you had him stopped." Make sure your CBs are great in man coverage, and use a safety and LB.

Vs a good offense, you may feel like you have to pick your poison. This happens in SIM football as well as H2H arcade matches.

This.

I usually just run a coverage that puts a linebacker on the tight end and then assign one of my defensive ends to man cover him as well. Neither player is necessarily good in coverage, but it gives you two bodies on him and a better opportunity of one of those guys being able to break up the play.

This loses some effectiveness if the person you're facing runs the ball or plays realistically, but what I've found playing people online is that oftentimes they only throw to one or two players and if you can shut them down, you win. Every time I've faced the Packers online, for instance, the player throws to Jermichael Finley about 80% of the time. Once you double cover him and he has to throw elsewhere, they panic and start making mistakes.

Yep.

Check out this video from Madden 2004. Funny how EA Sports can get something right 9 years ago but somehow get it wrong now.

Re: Stopping the Tight End?

I find making a lot of needed adjustments on defense, pre-snap, is very difficult, and I understand hurry up offense and its affect, but in Madden it is really always a hurry up....

One thing I believe has hurt is the ability for players to manually choose in the options which players on defense will cover who....
