Brand new to this series and need advice...

Totally new to the MLB The Show series and really even to Sports games in general on my PS3.. I use to play Madden a lot back in the 90’s

I just purchased MLB The Show 2013…

I love Baseball but one reason I have never really played or got into BB games on my PS3 is that seasons are so long in BB.. I realize there are other game modes..
My question is being that I am totally new to this game, what game mode would you guys recommend I start in to learn? I figured for sure select the Beginner level as it has intelligent progressing built in.. And maybe the “Play Now” mode?

What Mode do most of you play???? Do any of you just manage and play Franchise mode?? Or do most of you play players in the game? I am guessing most of you play players in the game?

Franchise mode looks interesting but here again how does that work with a 162 game schedule?

Thanks!

Re: Brand new to this Serise and need advice..

It really depends on what you enjoy most. There are quite a few ways you can enjoy the game and they cater to different audiences.

If you are looking for suggestions for your specific needs, you might want to provide a little more detail as to what *you* have enjoyed in the past. That way we have better ideas as to what you may be better to start with.

As an absolute beginner, I enjoyed Road to the Show very much. Hitting in this game is especially difficult (high learning curve) but essential to get down to enjoy the game fully, so I practiced mostly just hitting using the mode, slowly going up the difficulty ladder once I got decent results at a particular difficulty level.

Re: Brand new to this Serise and need advice..

Thanks for the reply.. As I am getting older I find myself playing more of the GM/Manager/Coach/Owner role in games but that is football where there is only 16 games per season. That is why I always wondered how these BB games work for franchise mode where you have 162 games.. So if I could hear back from people who love and play the franchise mode and how they do it and what its like and any tips.. That would be great..

On the flip side I think I will try and actually play a player in game.. Like Play Now Mode and yes I was even thinking the Road to the show looked interesting.. I am an old PC guy use to the WASD keys and mouse and/or Joystick control and have never really got into the PS3 500 different button combo controls (I know it’s not 500 but it sometimes feels that way to me) And I was like yikes when looking at The Show 2013 manual as there are like different subgroups of different control methods… I was like oh my gosh.. So if anyone has any control suggestions for what I should use for control in my situation that would be great to.. Oh and what position should I begin with as a beginner? I was thinking outfield?

Thanks!

I play franchise and I don't play all 162games. I play one game then simulate five then play 1 sim 5. It's really the only way to play 4 or 5 seasons in franchise within one year. You get to use all of your pitchers as you play with your #1 guy then sim 5 games and play with your #2 guys. Its fun as well because you have to count on the cpu to win you some games if you want to make the playoffs so you might have to build your team up over a couple of years to make the playoffs. Also if you download the OSFM you will be able to play with some of your teams real minor league players.

And when you say play 1 game and Sim 5, do you mean for that one game you Manage the game as like a Manager? Or you actually play a player in that 1 game?

Sorry for all my questions.. Just trying to see how most of the expereinced players play this game..

Kuroth,

I feel your pain. Few games give you more options or choices. It must seem quite overwhelming.

Here is my advice:

1. Look through the menus and the options. Get familiar with all the ways you can play and customize the game. Maybe even write them down.

2. Play all the modes for a while. Play Road to the Show. Start a Season or Franchise. Play a few pick-up games in Play Now. Go online a bit.

3. You will naturally gravitate towards what YOU enjoy. Who gives a damn what "experienced players" do? It's a game .... do what you enjoy.

Chuck M.

(You can get lost for weeks, if you are unwise, on just the task of finding the "right sliders" for your season. In other words, it is easy to get lost in not really playing this game, so don't do that. Just start playing around with all the options and have fun!)

Re: Brand new to this Serise and need advice..

I play all 162 games...it's definitely a challenge to find time to do it (staying interested isn't an issue). However, I use season mode, rather than franchise. I am only interested in playing the games, not doing all the management and budgeting. I typically only play one season with a given team, but I believe season mode will actually let you continue into the off-season and subsequent seasons just like franchise.

For me, I'm having an issue right now about what to do with my current season. I didn't buy The Show '12. My first season of '11, I played as the White Sox, and lost game 7 of the World Series. Put the game aside for a few months, and started a season with the Rockies sometime during the winter. By the time '12 came out, I was into June or July and didn't want to trash that season. So, I played it out, and won game 7 of the World Series with a walk off homer in the bottom of the 14th.

Got restless back in February, and pulled '11 out again, thinking I had no intention of getting '13. Just made it to the All-Star break with the Nationals. Then lo and behold, my daughter got me '13 for my birthday. I played a couple of games on Saturday to get a feel for it and really loved it...but, I feel like I need to finish out this final season of '11.

Good advice and Yes I do feel a bit lost.. I just read about Diamond Dynasty and wow.. That sounds interesting too. Did not realize they have incorporated aspects of a Collectable Card game...

I will do what you suggested as it sounds like the most logical thing to do..
