I'm in the play 1 sim 5 crowd as well. I might switch to play 1 game per series. Not sure yet.

Re: Play a shorter season, or sim more?

Haven't gotten this year's game yet as I'm waiting for the PS4 version so I don't know how much time the quick counts save, but what I've done in the past is simulate a half inning at a time until someone scores. If my team is in the lead, I will only do the pitching. If my team is behind, I will only do the batting. Then if it changes (I give up/take the lead), I will switch to the other side of things. If the game ends up tied again after a half inning I play, I'll go back to simming a half inning at a time.

This method has cut game times down to nearly a third of the time of a full game. You can also combine this idea with the quick counts feature to really fly through a game while still being involved in every game. The play 1, sim 5 method that other people are suggesting would accelerate things even further.

I'm sure there must be others here who don't have much time to devote to the game, so how do you play the game on limited time? Any suggestions for me?

Personally I cant play anything other than right amount of games, even if I didnt have enough time.
The QC's should help people get thru the full season much quicker, and then you have the player lock feature as well, that would speed things up even more.
Ultimately what ever makes you happy is what you should do. I know there is some out there that arent about realism, so they will play short seasons, but as a diehard baseball junkie I jyst couldnt bring myself to do that. There is just something very pure and sweet about a long baseball season, and what makes it so great and better than other sports imo.

Thanks. That is a really clear way to put it. I hadn't thought of it like that before.

Re: Play a shorter season, or sim more?

Between having two kids and training for a marathon, I'm definitely in your situation. Even before now though, I wouldn't play every game because I was trying to make it through multiple seasons. Shorter seasons or fewer innings never quite did it for me either. My solution was to randomly pick a day each week that I would play while simming the rest. Usually, I'd pick it before loading the franchise and, if it was a travel day, I'd sim the entire week and pick a day again for the following week.

Another approach that I saw and was intrigued by was to play one game per series in April, sim until September and then play every game through the end of the season. I started using this method with MLB 2k-something 4-5 years ago but then my 360 died and I switched to PS3 and The Show.

Hope those ideas helped.

Re: Play a shorter season, or sim more?

I opt for simming a bunch.

I settle into one of my team's rotation spots, picking one SP and playing on days when it's his turn to start.

For me, the fun thing about mostly sticking with 1 specific SP through the year is that it makes things more interesting when I have to control other pitchers. I spend so much of my time controlling one guy and getting comfortable with his windup/delivery, it makes other pitchers feel slightly foreign. So it makes controlling my bullpen pitchers more of an adventure, and it makes the playoffs more of a crapshoot when I start controlling the rest of my rotation again.

I mostly hate the idea of losing the meaning of stats by shortening games or shortening the schedule.

The only hypothetical scenario where I'd really enjoy a shortened season would be if they got crazy and let me completely change the format of the schedule.

If I could make the schedule like football, where you play 1 game a week (or one 3-game series every week, if you don't want each team's fate to be too closely tied to one arm like football is with the quarterback), I might be able to have fun with that kind of alternate universe. That would just be a fun exercise in seeing how the landscape would look if baseball kind of became a totally different sport. It would completely change certain personnel strategies and conventions, which would be fun to play with. Stats' meanings and standards would completely change, but I'd fly through seasons so quickly that it wouldn't be long before I settled into a new future where I had a good chunk of data on what the new standard was for each stat.

Still takes between 25-35 minutes to play a game with Quick Counts... that's roughly 80 hours of gameplay for just one season.
