I thought so too, having the Rookie of the Year and runner up for Rookie of the year in the same outfield.

I was too young for 1984 as I was 5, so 1989 was and still is my all-time favorite baseball team even over the 2016 championship team. As I've said before, Ryno is my all-time guy and 1989 was so fun and I still remember it so vividly. Hell, I still watch games on youtube from that season. I remember thinking 1990 was gonna be even better....of course this was coming from a 10 year old turning 11 year old eyes. To me, Ryno's 1990 is his best season as he carried over that scorching 1989 second half.

89 is definitely my 2nd all time favorite Cubs team. So much scar tissue built up from 84 and 89 that when 16 came around, while I loved it, it just didn't feel like it would have if it were 84 or 89. Ryno in 84 has to be my favorite season. He struggled so much in 82 and 83, at least to start each season, that to see him breakout in 84 was so much fun to watch. I still remember watching the Sandberg game in 84 and jumping up off the couch when he hit the two HRs off Sutter. Great times. I've also found myself rewatching some of those 89 games here recently on YT. I had just joined the Army in Feb 90, so I didn't really get to feed I to the hype going into Spring Training.

I started really kinda knowing what was going on in sports by the time I was 7-8 years old.....So that's 86-87ish. I really wish I would have been at an age to enjoy '84 because I know I would have loved everything except for the end.

For '89 I just remember the injuries early to the outfield and Sandberg kinda starting slow and his average was in the .250's-.260 range through July. I will never forget as a kid I also collected baseball card and there was a magazine around that time that was basically writing off Ryno and saying stuff like Ty Griffin is the future for the Cubs at second and it could happen as early as 1990. Now I live in Peoria, IL and he was on the Chiefs at that time....now, being young still I didn't know how far single-A Peoria was from the bigs in a year so I was believing that as a 10 year old. It was funny that not long after seeing that article Ryno just got scalding hot. Looking it up on Baseball-reference from Aug 1, '89 til the end of the season he slashed .333/.410/.611 with 15 HRs in 56 games. He then continued that pace throughout 1990. I remember as a kid watching his rookie cards just balloon in price. I think at one point it was like $60 as a 10 year old that might as well been a grand

I'm originally from Springfield, raised surrounded by Cardinals fans. So sports journalism has always had their trash hot takes. Ty Griffin was never going to touch Sandberg's spot. He was always the face of the Cubs. He was notorious for getting off to a slow start in the cold April's in Chicago so that "journalists" was just trying to antagonize Cubs fans. He was probably a Sox or Cardinals guy. Lbs
