MLB The Show 20: 2019-weighted/2020 new players custom roster

(I had posted this on the main MLB The Show forum last night, but I didn't realize there was a sub-thread just for custom rosters, so I'll adhere to the specialization and put this here; sorry about that!)

Hello folks, I wanted to pass along a roster upload I did for those looking for something fresh for The Show.

The point of this roster update was to accomplish a few things, mainly to reconfigure attributes to weigh more towards the 2019 season or ABs/innings totaling up to a basic equivalent of a last full season for a player. The goal of this is to reconfigure breakout players or role players stabilizing themselves last season, or players who might have had better ratings than deserved despite recent, large-sample-size poor performances and are moved downward accordingly. If you’ve seen a pitcher in current or past Show rosters who put up a 9, 10 K/9 a previous season but still have a very poor K/9 rating, or a guy who had a big 30-HR year but still has relatively weak power numbers due to their performance 2-3 years before, this is the sort of the thing my goal with this roster is looking to help rectify.

How this was achieved was studying the scale and distribution of every category in the Show across all players with ML experience and comparing that with player statistics representing said categories to come up with customized mathematical formulas to get an accurate re-rating across the board; there’s no blind guesswork involved, every attribute adjustment is rooted in either statistical performance or for players with little service time or who have debuted in 2020 so far, a variety of projections from places like ZIPS to get a realistic attribute adjustment. One important thing is that although every player with ML experience and players debuting or expecting to debut this year have been reworked, the distribution for roster attributes are still within the level of standard Show rosters, meaning this isn’t a custom roster where everyone is 90+ or something wacky. You’ll still see a general deviation of Diamond/Gold/Silver/Bronze/Common OVRs that should look like a normal Show roster.

Also to note that these numbers are also not in a vacuum; in extreme cases of injury-impeded or lack of experience sample sizes, attribute changes were customized to still reflect a realistic performance for a specific player. So if a guy was hurt last year and hit, say, .160 in 32 atbats, that player’s numbers are simply rolled back into their previous full season performance in order to reflect a more accurate sample size, instead of cranking their numbers to represent said 32 ABs.

Pitch speeds and arsenals for every pitcher with MLB-level info have been refreshed and updated using pitch data from Scout/Texas Leaguers. Although break and control for individual pitches have been left alone, speeds have been recaliberated to 2019 averages unless pitchers had injury-shortened seasons that affected their general velocity, and arsenals have been reordered to better represent how often a pitcher deals a certain pitch (for example, Oliver Perez’s slider has been moved up to his #1 pitch after throwing it about 50% of the time in 2019, so Perez’s AI should be dealing that more than the secondary pitches).

I have also created CAPs for players not included in the early base rosters of this year’s game (these were created just before the most recent 7/31 update that included some new missing players). These not only include players like international rookies, but also injured but still relevant players who were missing like AJ Puk. Attention has been paid to likeness, accurate equipment [brand and colors], attributes, and animations to make them as realistic as possible.

Players in the game who do not have specific commentary from Vasgersian have had their first and last name added in the custom voice-clips fields when applicable, so there should be less “Number 43” commentary unless their names are not in the included database. Fictional rookie ratings have also been tuned down to better emphasize the existing minor leaguers added for the first time in MLB 20.

There are two versions of this file, a V1 that represents the rosters as of Opening Day, and a V2 that updates transactions and lineups as of 8/4. I originally had players who had opted out promoted down to A-ball but after the flurry of teams who got hit with it, I decided it was less fun and feasible to do that, so the rosters have been optimized to include players who would be involved if not for the pandemic, and the only out-for-2020 players shuttled down to A-ball rosters are ones who suffered season-long injuries before the season began. Below is a list of created players I made and their OVRs, and the list of players moved to A-ball due to injury.

Re: MLB The Show 20: 2019-weighted/2020 new players custom roster

Thanks to 1500+ who downloaded my rosters in August and September last year! Just bumping this to let people know there will be Opening Day 2021 rosters coming this week for those who plan to stick with MLB 20 (or maybe want to grab it right now for $5) with updated transactions, attributes, pitch arsenals, personal info, and more! Stay tuned!

This sounds awesome!

"every attribute adjustment is rooted in either statistical performance or for players with little service time or who have debuted in 2020 so far, a variety of projections from places like ZIPS to get a realistic attribute adjustment."

Do you do something similar to Cycloniac's Truesim roster with standard stats or you use your own proprietary metrics for player rating purposes?

Re: MLB The Show 20: 2019-weighted/2020 new players custom roster

I have my own mathematical formulas that I use to convert statistics and sabremetrics into MLB The Show's ratings/attribute system. I got it down to where the attributes and OVRs will scale out like a regular base MLB The Show roster, so it doesnt result in crazy inflated ratings, and this year I'm using Statcast/MLB Baseball Savant to update pitch arsenals, speed, and break. It's something I've honed ever since I got into The Show back in 2008 and did them for myself every offseason, but now with roster sharing being a reality these days, I realized if I put in all this work, might as well throw it up there on the server!

That sounds great! Is the roster dropping tomorrow or Friday, it sounds like?

Re: MLB The Show 20: 2019-weighted/2020 new players custom roster

This weekend, Im shooting for Sunday. I got bogged down by some work on Tuesday and Wednesday, but now Im clear and hope to finish by the weekend, including updating minor league likenesses, adding the new international players making the 40-mans, and some of the recent draft picks. Having a couple of days of the season to get underway will also allow to make sure platoon lineups and positional updates (like Suarez moving to short and John Gant moving back to the rotation) are accurate. So far, I have just finished the NL in terms of ratings, so 15 teams down, 15 to go.

**UPDATE**
Had to push back the target date back a few days. Had to sub in for an esports event (life of a pro video editor lol) that cost a couple of days, and the rosters are taking me a little longer than anticipated because a good portion of the real minor leaguers included in the base roster are no longer in MLB/MiLB, getting cut due to either the shutdown last year or the minor league organizational cuts this past offseason. So with a bunch of those FA players now in Mexico, Australia, etc., Im changing some of these players into new current minor leaguers on the rosters right now to keep them accurate, which should help future-proof them when MiLB gets underway in May.

Now shooting for Wednesday, I've completed the NL teams, AL West, the ChiSox and Cleveland so far. Just to give a peek behind what will be in the roster drop, all individual attributes, including stuff like hit trajectory tendencies, vision/discipline, etc. have been updated for current players with MLB experience based off the last season and half. Statcast data is being used to update all players with MLB experience in regards to pitch speed, break, arsenal, and order (pitch types from most used to last pitch in their arsenal).

Also refreshing real minor leaguer likenesses; I didnt realize until I've been digging on these how many last year were really off in terms of skin/hair/eye color being incorrect, so Ive been tidying those up with the goal of their portrait photos looking like their current headshots. Also updating equipment where I can at the start of the season, like Julian Merryweather's all-blue glove, Braves pitchers with red gloves or red accents in the design, losing the Marlins colors off of Jose Urena's glove now that he's in Detroit, and so forth. There will also be continuous roster and rating updates throughout the year to keep it current for any latecomers.
