You'd definitely tune the power down for the Eighties & kick up the speed

This is actually a really interesting idea, instead of trying to replicate current numbers, you could essentially reintroduce a completely different way to play the game.

The really good roster makers tailor the player ratings to the era they are creating.

What I do tweak is starter and reliever stamina and the CPU manager hook.
