My worry with the carry-over saves is that they'll stop any major changes to player models in the future to make sure every carry-over roster is the same visually.

I don't think that would be a problem. There were some drastic changes for players' facial hair and hair styles from anyone that imported a save file for MLB 14 from PS3 to PS4 and that didn't cause any problems.
