How does starting pitcher energy work on online games?

I noticed that sometimes when selecting a starting pitcher for an online game they will not have full energy. I think it has to do with what pitcher I used before online but I'm not sure. How does this work exactly?

For online rated games you can choose your starting pitcher (unlike DD), but you need to use a rotation - if you ignore that and start the same one each game, your pitcher will start the game with less energy than full. Check the green bars next to your pitchers when deciding who to start.
