Thoughts on pre-post-halftime shows for 2k24

I think we would have a more detailed game in terms of visuals and presentation, and all that stuff that is sim gamers want if 2k didn’t seem to spend more time on myplayer storylines and city gimmicks each year. If you think about it, where has the game really had substantial changes every year? It’s been myplayer/city.

Graphically, even on next GEN, the game has not improved very much since what about 2K14? Whatever iteration had great lighting in cloth physics for jerseys. I’d say that rendition was the last time the game really took a step forward visually. Certain players have had the same faces and body types for a long time. There’s a lot that can be done better visually and gameplay wise, which I think 2K could certainly do if they would stop focusing the majority of their resources into my player and online.

Focusing on the SIM experience - immersion of a true to life NBA broadcast in terms of visuals that blow you away and presentation and gameplay that is as close to real life as it gets is what made them great in the first place. Here’s hoping at some point they return to what they know best.

The halftime show is fine for play now games. In MyNBA, it is lacking a lot. I appreciate that 2K has added in conversations about trades, standings, injuries, 3pt and dunk contests, and even fan questions. It's not immersive enough.

Overall, I think it's time for a presentation refresh. 2K has been on this template since around 2K15.

I'd personally love to just have 2K14 next gens presenation package. The Damon Bruce halftime show was informative, fresh, and wasn't too long. 2K14 even had cut ins with stats from around the league during your games. It was the coolest thing to me to be at the free-throw line and see the gameplay screen minimize while they showed stats from other games around the league. I haven't seen it in any other 2Ks since. I'd love for 2K14s package with Damon Bruce or whoever to just be the default 2K24 package.

In 2K24, I'd like to only see Shaq, Ernie and Kenny during the game of the week, holiday games, and the playoffs. Also, I'd like to see them address stories from around the league. If there are rumors in the social media tab about Doc Rivers being on the hotseat then address it even if neither team playing is the 76ers. If LeBron goes down with an injury for 2 months, talk about how that will affect the Lakers. Basically, bring some of the social media NBA related stories to us. The fake Twitter tab in 2K has so much stuff in it.

Also, have little segments like "Kenny's Stamp of Approval" from 2K7 or the Top 3 plays that used to be shown in older 2Ks.

All this sounds great but won't happen. They got stagnant. They added mynba eras but regular mynba been basically the same since last gen myleague. The upgrade to next gen did nothing for mynba. Oh my bad they added warm weather badge which does NOTHING. My team can go 2 and 80 and I can still sign anyone as long as I got the money. Free agency needs a massive overhaul. But yeah I agree halftime sucks

Some thoughts after playing a Myleague game tonight. (These are intended for console, as PC can pretty much make the presentation better overnight with mods.) I'll break this down into pre, during, and post-game.

Thoughts for the Pregame:

Pre-game pro (what works well imo): Introductions (most are great, like the national anthem, starting line ups, etc.) Do more of these. Different broadcast teams are great. Keep adding. Make them visually intro the game on court.

Pre-game recommendation: BRING back city,landmark,or arena blimp shots at the start of games. These were really cool and in previous 2k's. Why were they removed and not improved upon?? Continue to incorporate use of real brands (eg: new balance etc.) across the board if you can't get the license to NBA on TNT or something.

Pre-game eyesore must fix: Things like Allie Laforce's necklace OVER her jacket? For God's sake, fix it. If the little things add immersion, little things can break immersion too. REAL PLAYER LINEUP PICS! I don't' want to see Chistian Wood's digital picture in some weird rebound or loose ball position if you have his actual headshot in other areas on the presentation.

Thoughts during the game:

During the game pros: visually overall, if I glance at the game while playing, it looks like a real broadcast in passing. In game highlights (like the block, drives, assist highlights) these are great. Highlights going into supposed commercial breaks with music are great. Coaches mic'd up are usually great.

During the game recommendations: keeping adding variety to timeouts breaks and halftime with things beyond dance teams, cheerleaders, etc. What was done for 2k23 was great, but keep adding to it. Keep improving the commentary. Add more variety to the stories and topics discussed between the play by play. When you play 82 games of a season multiple times, listening to how Kyrie has chosen to take his power back multiple times can get old fast. If I see the camera pan to watch that same white guy gallop to the left side of the court and point to the crowd before he throws a shirt coming back from halftime in 2k24, I might pull my hair out I've seen it so much in 2k23. Variety is the spice of life 2k!

During the game eye sore, must fix: Add more emotion to players faces during the game, especially in the paint. Get sweat to work right. Add dynamic hair (Ie luka's hair looks one way pre game, and looks sweaty different over the course of the game because he's playing hard.) CONTINUE TO IMPROVE PLAYER MODELS. I don't think Dwight Powell or Josh Green have EVER had a player update to their face or body. I say that partly joking but partly not...

Thoughts on post game:

Post game pros: Player interviews are well done for the most part, the assist of the game (when it works well is great, the Jordan player of the game is great. Continue to improve these things.

Post game recommendations: Continue to improve audio samples used in player interviews. Add variety here too! Add emotion to the player models.

Post game eye sore must fix: Make it longer. Just like with the halftime show, create a post-game show worth watching. This would be awesome with the broadcast team reviewing hightlights discussing especially if you just played an amazing game and put up realistic but amazing stats.

I express these things merely because I want 2k to continue to blow us away as NBA fans and 2k fans. I know 2k is a great game and I think it could be something truly special, especially on next gen.

After season 2 in nba eras the commentary becomes super stale. There is only play by play commentary except some player specific at free throws. Just keep the little comments about developments in the league throughout the other seasons too.

College hoops 2k def had the best presentation I’ve ever seen ..they had preseason projected player of the year and all Americans and projected top teams ..then they had players of the week and players of the month with visuals of their highlights as well as games of the week with visual highlights..then they had the march madness brackets and bubble teams who still have a chance to make it in with visual analysis ..they need to bring that back just switch it for the nba march madness analysis would just switch to talking about play in tournament and who they think will make it into the playoffs..

I think you're both right. NFL 2K and College Hoops 2K definitely seemed to signal where "studio" presentation was headed and then it sort of seemed to have been abandoned over the past 15 years.

I think there could be a bit of a chicken-or-the-egg situation happening. I imagine there aren't a lot of folks who watch the current iteration of studio time on account of its basic nature. In turn, I imagine 2K likely sees that nobody watches halftimes or pregames and assumes it's not worth the effort because nobody watches it.

However, I [i]would[i] watch if it was worth my while. In MyEras/MyNBA, it's too easy to imagine a College Hoops-esque studio show breathing life into an already impressive mode, helping the league feel alive around me. Some generic highlights from the week, notable performances, Players of the Week, injuries, trades, upcoming events, team streaks, league leaders, all-star voting, rumors surrounding unhappy players, etc. There's so many ways to go here.

As it pertains to halftime, in MyNBA & Eras anyway, even scores from around the league would help.

That's all to say that I think there's a lot of potential and room for improvement in regards to pre-game and halftime shows.
