Definitely surprised at that.

But to clarify, yeah, I agree that they should start from further in...just don't want them to take it too far in and mess up the flow of the game....I don't want to pass to a cutter and have him pull up for a jumper in front of the rim because the start point for gathers is too close...

i remember in live 2004 there was a specific button for dunks & layups so you could attempt one from literally anywhere. some really funny animations happened when you did try

Nothing wrong with where you start your dunk/layup. LMAO, people whine about anything.

You're right, you're whining, not "whinning" whatever that word means.

Someone who calls out stupid thread? Yep, that's me.

But of course this never actually happens in an actual NBA game, right?

Not to mention the video OP linked didn't even have a free throw line dunk.

I think they're just about right. You don't have to initiate the gather from far out. You can get closer to the goal if you want/need to. However, you have the option to start the gather from far out if you can (which looks so realistic on fast breaks). The only down side are those times when you actually want to shoot the pull up and it sucks you into a layup animation. I don't run into that very often, but it is frustrating when it happens.

Just a quick glance at a few videos to demonstrate. You see the guys in the pros start their gather beyond the free throw line regularly.

Rudy Gay Dunk, followed by Darren Collison layup: http://youtu.be/WKJCN96lNvg?t=1m1s

Westbrook dunk where he begins his gather right at the 3 pt line (with the aid of an NBA "3rd step"): http://youtu.be/X42udSG_HB0?t=2m8s

Now, these were all on fast breaks absent of physical defense. There were defenders in the way, but not actively checking the ball handler. But I just wanted to show that these guys can start their gathers from a long distance away from the goal in real life. I feel like 2K actually has this part down pretty well. Now the success rates, and the instances in which these can occur, that's debatable. But I don't see anything unrealistic about being able to initiate a gather beyond the free throw line.
