How do i get past CPU?

as a Defensive minded person, i love that the game brings Defense back, but now im finding it pretty hard to get past the CPU or even get open.

im running plays, im doing pick and rolls and its like the CPU sees right thru it and i have no space to do anything. i must say, this is the worst i ever been at a 2k lol.

the 2nd thing i want to learn how to do this so i can get by people who play off ball online. 3/4 of my games online turns into the other guy just running around with Sim bullar (MYteam) after his defensive plan fails.

    any tips guys

I'm not a 2k guru, but the CPU AI On-Ball defense appears to be a bit too strong on default. I have tried all levels, superstar, all-star, and pro, but the D really glues to you on defense.

I am happy they made defense a lot better this year, but my guess is we will have to tune down the default on-ball defense a bit.

Use picks. There aren't many guys that are crossing up defenders and blowing by them in real life.

yea i was thinking that too honestly, i can always tone it down offline and have fun. but then that wouldnt help me with online unless 2k nerfs it for whatever reason.

i had to check many times what difficulty i was on after getting locked up by garbage defenders lol

im a broadcast cam guy..but i've notice that the 2k cam in 16 is better as far as player spacing...on this camera I feel sizeups/hesitations and crossovers are more effective due to spacing..I manage to get by players with these doing pnrs and mismatches better..lol i beat the pelicans with the wizards on allstar by 6..also note the a.i. is smart you have to make proper adjustments after each quarter..if you are kicking butt with lebron on quarter expect the cpu will make adjusment to shut him down the next...also defensively you have to make changes

Ball movement is my number one suggestion. Icon Passing.

As a 2k gamer who does NOT like to do isolation stick skills to blow by the CPU, ball movement is always key for me.

Side Note: Every time these type of threads pop up, I get a little more heartbroken each and every single time. A stronger defense is a good thing. Gamers wanting to be good at the game immediately when it's only been a couple days is another crushing blow.

Why can't gamers be more patient and actually make the $60 bucks that you spent ... count and actually worth the money spent.

The more these types of thread pops up, the more I feel like the developers are going to cave and patch it, allowing the offense to once again over power the defense.

Isn't that a good thing that CPU defense is challenging especially for someone who is NOT a 2k guru?

Please clarify your final statement "my guess is we will have to tune down the default on-ball defense a bit." Are you implying that the developers should tone down the on ball defense so it's easier for the gamer... once again, like every single year.

Side Note: The following is not mean to be directed at you specifically, but just a general feeling I get when I come across any of these types of threads about defense is a little too challenging. It's just frustrating to see gamers not wanting a challenge anymore.

Battletoads, Ghosts and Goblins, etc. What would happen if developers were able to patch these type of games?

NBA2k gamers complain about "offensive cheese this" and "offensive cheese that" and "offense cheese there" and "offense cheese here" and "offense cheese everywhere," but when defense finally shows its face, the same people want the defense to be toned down so that cheese can smile once again.

im not asking for it to be toned down, i actually wana get better with it in its current state. the ONLY Reason i would have for wanting it tuned down is for the guys online who are letting the CPU handle people for them. but im not complaining cause most of those games are still winnable. its just annoying.

i try to play as much as a team game as possible, passing , plays, PnRs, and etc. im saying here it just seems like the CPU has EVERYONE on lock lol getting D'd up on by JJ reddick had me rolling

"It seems like..." Please answer the following question:
                  (A) What difficulty are you playing at?
                  (B) How many minutes are you playing?
                  (C) How many points are you scoring each game?

I definitely understand you crystal clear, make no mistake about that. I completely understand what you are saying.

But at the same time, wanting it tuned down online is indirectly requesting the developers to make the CPU less effective overall, both offline and online. Meaning the developers will now need to put in more hours toning down the games overall defense. That is my guess. Developers are going to want to make things easier by tuning things the same across the board (meaning if they tune down the online CPU defense, they might as well just tune the offline CPU defense).

Why not simply get better playing against the CPU? Once you do that, you don't have to worry about online gamers play off ball defense because you would already have your skill level up when playing offline CPU?

I was simply referring to the fact that we can tune sliders down if we see fit. I was not implying that the Developers make any changes to the core game.

I agree with you, it is fantastic that defense is challenging this year. However, I do feel the on ball AI defense is a bit too "sticky", if that makes sense. Either that, or maybe I just do not know the controls well enough to use moves that can blow by defenders.

I have been using Golden State and it has been near impossible for me to do a move and blow by anyone with Curry.

focus more on getting space for open shots than beating your man off the dribble 1 on 1. Alternatively use the post

it's good this way, I like it. real basketball is not trying to get past your defender for a layup every possession

I don't know if this is "funny," but personally I always want the developers to make the defense even tougher. If the CPU is sticking to me like white on rice, I want the developers to make the CPU stick to me like super glue.

As a Golden State Warriors fan all my life, I have always used the Warriors in my video games. I have also been having difficulty blowing by the CPU with Curry, but that simply means I need to practice more. However, Curry also normally calls for a pick to truly get pass his defenders to create space in real life. And I'm loving it. Even if it takes me 2 to 3 months to finally get Curry to blow by people, I'll be happy. I don't like isolation plays, and I am terrible on the sticks.

If I can't blow by people with Curry, then I use my go to move -- ball movement, icon passing to the open man, to the cutter, to the screener... but ball movement will always, always be key.

Re: How do i get past CPU?

I've always found ball movement and some early pick and roll action will make it especially easy for you to break down a defender later in the possession. Once you get the defense moving quite a bit you can get by the cpu when it's off balance and trying to recover to the wing. Also kick outs from the post after double downs will have the defense scrambling, a quick pump fake and hesi explode dribble and you're past the defender. If another defender comes over kick it out and drive and kick again until you've found the shot you're looking for. The key to a good offense in this game (and surprisingly real-life NBA basketball) is the drive and kick. Putting the defense off balance is the key, start with running a play and see if you can get a defender trying to close out on a guard running off a screen, from there it's easy money and much more rewarding. Not only are you using the shot clock and making the computer work on defense but you're spreading the ball around and keeping your team involved.

Loving that this type of strategy is in offense this year, there's still plenty of freestyle and stick skills involved but you need to set the CPU up to do so beforehand.

Yes i have notice there is gonna be a whole lotta off-ball players this year, no problem with the defense, as strawberry mentioned, just have to know what iso works for the player you are using & run plays, still some turbo abusers, but in a way 2k is encouraging it by holding rt & sizeup moves but i do have a problem with the steal spamming. every game on 5 min isn;t about 10 steals & 12 blocks, thats unrealistic & ive seen alot of ppl run iso the whole game, because of the defense being too good
