In fact, his lifetime dunk make percentage is pretty bad. This is why he needs the low dunk rating, and low contact dunk rating because like you said, he hasn't dunked over anybody in years. And with the low dunk rating, if he is player controlled and tries something fancy, he should miss just like real JR. Flashy dunk tendency should be mid-high so that AI JR Smith still tries those crazy moves out of nowhere, too.
I mean basically until they change the dunk system guys who we know have crazy verticals and can occasionally bring out some in-game dunk contest stuff (on a break) will continue to be just a little more op.

I mean look at Lebron for example. Hasn't consistently been a guy to dunk on people for like the past 4 years but play a game with him in 2K and he'll get at least a poster or 2 a game. It is better this year but still not perfect.

Anyone remember Terrence Williams from the Nets? He was just as good as Iguodala when he averaged 20 a game for the Sixers lol. Anyone with a mediocre jumper and high dunk could be a star for you in older games.

Haven't played with Gerald Green yet, but I doubt he's as good as POPE Earl III

At least in the simplified version of basketball that NBA 2K gives us.

For all the improvements, we're still playing checkers rather than chess.

He could've been possibly better than Wade...look at his range on his shot...he just never had the focus to take the next step...and that's off the court too.
Wade came into the league as a two-way point guard. J.R. Smith was a gunner out of high school. Beyond jump shooting there isn't anything JR did/does better.

I mean you can't complain because he'll never average 25 in a full season in 2K...and quick games anyone can go off so you can't say it shouldn't happen.
That has more to do with tendencies and teammates. In quick games he'll go off much more than the average player, he has the consistency of a star when it is widely known he is streaky.

Oh and we need a transition dunk vs half court dunk rating. Someone like JR might do something flashy in transition, but in a set he's not gonna posterize people.
We technically have that. They added "Contact Dunk" rating but naturally gave him a rating (40, which might seem low, but the average PF/C has 45) equal to Timofey Mozgov. The other issue is 70 Driving Dunk is way too high for a player that dunks 15 times per year. Dunk animations (flashiness) are a signature thing and shouldn't be predicated on dunk rating (how often does an NBA player even pull off a "flashy" dunk? League-wide it's maybe twice a month).

Essentially, he hasn't been the same player since knee surgery (the summer after sixth man of year).

2013: 17.6 PER, 52 TS%, 27 USG%, 15 AST%, 16 DRB%, 35% 3PA Rate, 25% FT Rate
Since: 13.8 PER, 53 TS%, 21 USG%, 15 AST%, 12 DRB%, 53% 3PA Rate, 12% FT Rate

He is really just shooting threes now (67% of his shots w/ CLE were threes)

0-3 Feet
2015: 56 FG%
Career: 60 FG%
2013: 64 FG%
2012: 66 FG%

So it's clear he is either
A. Much worse at finishing around the rim
B. Not able to create the opportunities he did in his younger years.

Analyzing his dunk data, he was a big-time dunker his first 4 seasons in the NBA (Age 19-22), settled in as an above average dunker (Age 23-26), and is now just an average dunker given his natural, athletic decline (Age 27-29).

The core issue is that guards RARELY dunk in real life (even Jordan was once or twice a game in his youth - which is NOTHING compared to how many shots he was actually taking) but that is the selling point of the game for a lot of people. People want to dunk with guards, and it is still stupid easy to do so. Lance Stepenson dunked TWICE last season and just think of how many times you banged with him last year if you used him (68 Dunk Rating, 50 Contact Dunk, 50 Standing Dunk, he's actually better than JR here, just can't shoot).

Re: Is J.R. Smith Always Going to be 2K Royalty?

I guess in my opinion. J.R. has come a long way since those days I remember him being LeBron. And it was so hard. But I guess in the last few years with all the rating changes and the new one coming out every year. I haven't felt that JR was overpowering. He's actually been up and down in games for me. And that's been on both side of using him and playing vs him.

You touch upon a core issue.
Do you think this can be remedied by rating tweaks or is it ingrained into the system?

When MyTeam came out in 2K13 I used to start Gerald Green at PF, and routinely took out players rocking Hall of Fame teams (my logic was a lot of players started LeBron or Bird at PF rather than a traditional back to the basket player). I was in the 2nd seed with an all-Silver team IIRC.

He might as well be prime Vince Carter.

Game mechanics have changed a bit to limit his overall effectiveness (his low defense and pass ratings matter more now) but no other player beyond LeBron more capable of transition cheese.
