I still use the intense-D shot contest, but I've contemplated using manual a few times. However, up until patch 3, I relied on intense-D solely for defense. Since then, I've started tapping the turbo button with intense-D for the best defense along with right stick at times.

Only problem was the amount of fouls I was still getting in the paint. But I found some success not going for blocks in the paint all of the time or using intense-D. The best way to defend paint moves like drop-steps and lay ups as far as I'm concerned is by using the vertical block control. My defense has personally improved since patch 3.

The more time that passes the more i think right stick shot contests do affect shooting percentages more than automatic ones...

The game manual says to hold the stick back and hit block for a vertical contest.

I just hold the R stick back.
