When you completely fill the 'doing work' orange bar on my career and it says it goes to an attribute upgrade, what does this actually do?

Where can you view the players current stamina/energy levels during the game or timeouts? The only way I can find is to leave the game to the main menu and view 'game plan' which is very clumsy. Is anyone else struggling with substitutions during timeouts or am I doing something wrong. Finally, there is not enough time to make substitutions during the quarter or halftime breaks.
