Missing lay-ups

I get that the new lay-up meter has been implemented. Also i know for a fact that since you didn't have to time your lay-up last year, I was holding the button/stick UNTIL it was time to release the ball

But this year it seems that a semi-contested lay-up is a certain miss for me, even with Lebron

I have a much better chance of scoring a fully contested 3 with Curry than a fully contested lay-up with LBJ.

Is this normal? I mean there are quarters than I have 1/10 lay-ups and is horrible.
