Right stick usage

The right stick actually has quite a bit of functionality in 2K, I thought I'd gather together some things that people may not be aware of, for informational purposes.

Rebounding:

When boxing out, the right stick can be used in conjunction with the left stick to force the other player to a specific spot on the court to make it harder for them to get the rebound.Point in the direction you want to try and move them.

When you are boxed out, the right stick does various moves to slip by the player boxing you out. Push towards the side you want to try and go to.

Offense:

Off ball, the right stick makes your player perform a pretty quick cut/launch in the direction you push. This works pretty well when opponents try to body up and deny you off ball, as it lets you slip the defender. You can also use this to get into the lane to crash the offensive boards if timed properly.

Defense:

Off ball, the right stick can be used to hold/push/chuck a moving offensive player. Push in the direction you want them to go (pushing into the player lets you try to push them back the way they came). If defending the roll man in a P&R situation, you can use this to completely ruin their roll to the hoop.

You can also use the right stick in conjunction with left stick to navigate around picks quickly (slip move).

On ball, it has a few uses besides just shot contest. On dribbling opponents, the right stick does quick cut off moves, often giving you hip riding animations (All those crazy contact animations the CPU does when shutting down your you drives, including that shove looking animation that looks like a foul but is never called? This is how you do it.).You can use this without holding L2 to defend very effectively as well. Again, use in conjunction with the left stick and push the right stick in the direction you want to force them.

Great list. The only thing to add is layups.. you can actually trigger what kind of layup you do when driving to the rim. The right obviously tells you what hand or side your going to finish with. But the left stick can trigger which ones come it

You're right,I should have included that.

Right stick away from the hoop is also how to trigger floaters and baseline reverse moves.

Also, immediately after a shot fake in or near the paint, moving the right stick left or right will trigger different faders which use the layup meter. You can also do this immediately after a shot fake while posted up and it will trigger different little post shots that also use the layup meter instead of the regular shot meter. The direction you push the right stick is the direction you will lean/drift in.

That was something i expected 2kLeague brought up the light but it failed big in my eyes hopefully going forward we'll see the real advanced playing gets shine.
It's a great list i wish i could have written this post b4 never thought i could thanks for letting others know about, also what jeebs added.

Too bad there’s no practice mode where you can actually go over all of these maneuvers

That's the one thing lacking from 2k. I'd like them to catch up with. Like FiFA has those mini games. That work on skills. They did have something I think for 2k13-14.... But then they scrapped it. And I haven't seen it since. I've been meaning to ask Mike about it.

I agree, a mode to set up custom scenarios for practicing different skills would be a big help.

A lot of the stuff on this list were things we didn't fully discover until I sat down with a buddy in PNO, and we spent the whole time really exploring the different animations, how they branch, and what exactly different combinations of buttons and stick movements do in different situations.

We learned that a lot of those right stick defensive cut off maneuvers are pretty quick animations, almost equivalent to holding down R2 but do not use any turbo; with a decent defender and some practice you can pretty effectively defend on ball using only the sticks and only pressing L2 when you think they will shoot.

I am now beginning to think that many of the complaints about CPU defense (perfect defense, warping, pushing people out of bounds with no foul, etc.) is due to the CPU using this "right stick method" for defending, and thus being able trigger some pretty fast and effective animations pretty much on command.
