I hope 2K23 is on a new engine. 2K22 and the past 4 games have all been built off 2K18.

Shhhhhhhh!

I'm not going to front though. The mini vacation was nice, lol. Now, I just play mostly offline and MyTeam Limited Mode.

Two reasons I'm most likely skipping.

On PC current gen the lack of foul calls is beyond frustrating, even after maxing out sliders. The game is really good other than that. I never played a 2k game since the PS2 so I think the game is pretty good.

Also it seems 2k is in no rush to give PC players the next gen version.

If both of these issues are dealt with for 2k23 I will change my position.

Imo the game is due for a pretty big overhaul. May not be 2K23, but somewhere down the pipeline another 2k14 or 2K16 is coming I believe.

That's one thing I don't understand. PCs can definitely handle it too, maybe the execs think that PC players love the current gen version?

For a lot of my life, buying 2K was a tradition that I'd buy Day 1 no questions asked. But after 2K13, I broke the cycle and I've only been an intermittent buyer ever since. Buying 2K22 is probably my biggest consumer regret of the past year and I realized my mistake almost immediately (and vented about it here for a couple weeks). I don't think I've fired up the game since November.

There's been portions of gameplay that have frustrated me for years (generally the band aide fixes to promote competition - like sliding/warping defenders). And it's all just sort of come to a head, where it feels like I'm constantly fighting the game in order to get a semi-realistic feeling simulation experience and typically, I just come out frustrated.

When MLB The Show came to XBox this past year it felt like such a breath of fresh air and all my sports gaming time went there instead. Feels like a novel concept to find a difficulty level in The Show that fits just right and allows me to play a realistic, fun-filled game where everything makes sense and I'm not being bludgeoned by monetization techniques and corny storylines.

Firing up 2K22 gave me strong vibes of having aged out of 2K's demographic, like the dude at the college bar who realizes everyone there is from a completely different generation.

Yeah it really is getting that way... and I had the same experience playing MLB The Show 21 for the first time on xbox game pass - even though I'm a way bigger basketball fan than baseball fan. I'm like wow! imagine that, a game that actually feels like it's actually trying to replicate the sport and actually trying to be a simulation. And you can see this illustrated with the dev team and company too - they care about baseball. They kinda remind me of who NBA 2K used to be - a company that cared a lot about simulation basketball.

2K has lost its way ever since gameplay producer(?) Rob Jones left. I don't think Mike Wang has the same backbone when it comes to being about the sport. Apparently, he was the only one that genuinely cared about representing basketball. It's not surprising to me at all that sentiment has gone down over the last few years. 2K is a commercial success (because, monopoly) but they're not a critical success. They used to be both, now they're only one. Idk if they care anymore since the dollars are rolling in, but they should.
