What am I doing wrong?

I've been trying to learn the controls in 2K11's demo; I have no NBA games background.

And I just dont understand what I'm doing wrong. I feel frustrated as I struggle with the controls. I'm fighting to control my players just as much as I'm fighting the Celtics.

I watched that 2K11 controls video, and yet it doesn't seem to work in the demo. Or am I doing something wrong? I can't get the corssovers when I want to, I couldn't do I spin either, for example.

Plus, there is the shooting. What am I doing wrong when shots miss, and what am I doing right when shots go in? There are no feedbacks at all to this. Sometimes I'd be Bynum at the baskect and defeats the defender, sometimes not. Sometimes I'd be Artest or Kobe taking a 3 point shot, and they go in randomly. I don't know what I did right when it is in; or what went wrong when I don't.

Also, the CPU can move right through my players (goes right by them smoothly); yet I can't pull the same move, when the defender is on my, I get glued to him.

Can you please explain to me the mechanics of this game?

It'll take some time. I play 2K every year and every time the demo for the up-coming game is released I struggle as well. I also feel like I'm fighting to control my player so you're not alone in that regard.

The only thing I can suggest is try the dribble moves in the backcourt, that way you won't have to worry about defenders bumping you.

Plus, there is the shooting. What am I doing wrong when shots miss, and what am I doing right when shots go in? There are no feedbacks at all to this. You want to release the shot button/stick when the player is at the top of his jump. With no explicit feedback it's hard to tell how well you're doing. So just keep trying and eventually you'll start to get the feel for when to release. I'd suggest just shooting with one player to start (Kobe of course) so you can focus on perfecting his release first.

Also, the CPU can move right through my players (goes right by them smoothly); yet I can't pull the same move, when the defender is on my, I get glued to him.

The key to beating the CPU off the dribble is to get him leaning in one direction then crossing over to the opposite side. It'll be hard to do if you don't have the dribble moves down yet. The basic crossover is usually the most effective move so get that move down and you'll be on your way.

Can you please explain to me the mechanics of this game?
I apologize for being so vague but it true what they say that practice makes perfect. Hope that helps a bit.

Okay dude i'm an experience 2k veteran the behind the back is kind of tricky not as easy as last year but its something you get the hang of to do the behind the back you just can't do it easily as last year you have to be moving on a direction and jerk the stick in a behind the back motion i guess pushed inward on the left thumb stick and curve down it sohuld word you gotta do it quick and when you do it don't use the right stick it repeat don't use the RIGHT stick this or turbo or left trigger its a movement move that you do liek in real life you have to be moving in a direction and do it

Re: What am I doing wrong?

The thing is with 2K basketball, unless you're a vet of the series, the controls will be incredibly hard for you to master at first. They aren't entirely responsive to begin with (Although this year has the best feel in a long time) but once you get down the moves, they become second nature to you.

I'm also assuming that when you said you can't get past your defender, that you're ISOing alot with certain players. Try and work the ball around, use dribble moves with good dribblers (Kobe is really the only elite dribbler the Lakers have) They run a very complicated offense in the triangle so Isolations (unless with Kobe and sometimes Odom) aren't really in the playbook. It's all about ball movement when it comes to them. Swinging that ball around and utilizing your inside out game with Pau and Bynum should open up the 3 point shots for Kobe, Ron and D Fish.

And yeah, shooting is a bit of a crapshot, but if you time the release at the height of your jump, you should be able to make a reasonable amount. Also, you have to know your players strengths and weaknesses. Kobe is an excellent midrange/fadeaway jumpshooter/slasher. You should really only be taking 3's with him when you have a significant amount of space to do so. Ron Artest and Derek Fisher are the guys you really want to get spot up 3's with.

For the dribble moves, again, it's going to be hard if you're not a 2K vet, what I suggest you do if you're buying the game is to go into practice mode and spend a few hours there. They give you lots of feedback and tutorial instructions, plus when you shoot they tell you if it's early, perfect, late, etc. 2K basketball this year at least, is simulation all the way. If you don't know your team or how to use them you will get burnt.

Just practice those controls though man, they aren't perfect, but trust me, you will get them down. I hope this helped and if there's anything else you need just ask..

thanks, that was helpful.

What about defense? Are there ways to put the players' hands up? And how does the right stick work in D? It sometime seems if the right stick causes the player to just stand there.

Do I have to rely on the AI to block/intercept passes?

As for the hop button, when I trigger it, Kobe does some crazy spin move. Is there any way I can control which move it triggers?

Thanks for your help. I really want to get to know how to play 2K, since the game sucks to play for me (not knowing how to properly control) as it is.

they should have included a tutorial in the demo, instead of this stingy demo.

Behind the back is just like the spin, except without holding L2 or LT (I think that's for the 360). It's just a half circle from the ball hand to non ball hand. This years controls are a lot more fluid and easier to pull off. Well except for the half spin.

I also like how you can explode out of the triple threat and also when you turn your back to the defender.
