NBA 2K8: The Turning Point In the 2k Series

NBA2k8 before the patch was the most realistic depiction of basketball that has ever been put out imo. The game was not concerned about making the outcomes look correct, but was concerned with punishing players like they would be punished in real life.

But, this was too much for the 2k basketball community as a whole to handle. The community lashed back at 2k complaining about missed layups and open jumpshots. The problem with this criticism is that they were not open layups or jumpshots. The community did not understand that it was user error and it frustrated them. The all wondered why they missed so many layups but players in real life don't miss as many layups. They just didn't get the fact that players aren't spamming bad layups play after play. They didn't understand that it was user error.

At this point in time 2K had a choice, a rather easy one at that. Either cater to the masses or cater to the people who understood what was happening. 2K made the obvious and correct choice to cater to the masses because at the end of the day this is a business. The decided to be more concerned with outcomes looking sim than the game actually playing sim.

Because of this we have what we have to today. An flawed game that is unplayable to someone who wants a basketball simulation.

I think 2k has a pretty good middle ground in that sense. For the hardcore there is HOF+sliders and rosters, and for the casual there is default. Allowing user content is 2ks way of allowing you to play how you want to play.

This.

Online will always be messed up, it's human nature to do whatever it takes to win, even in something as frivolous as a video game.

But offline, where this game truly shines, is completely customizable to suit anyone at any skill level. Find the right sliders and the right difficulty, with the correct game speed, and you can have the most sim experience ever put out in a sporting title.

Or, you can leave it at default and just have fun with it.

OR, you can complain incessantly about problems that are easily fixable via the tools 2k has provided you.

I had to laugh at the bold. 2k13 unplayable? 2k13 is the best depiction of basketball we have ever seen. No that's not a fan boy statement.

The game is so in depth, if you have a great basketball mind this game brings a smile to your face. I'm not even going to get to deep in the conversation because that statement is just crazy. I understand it's your opinion but the game is farrrrrr from unplayable.

So what does this mean? If you're happy with the direction of the game, you don't know basketball? This post is very presumptuous. I think everyone can still see missed lay ups when they should. Made jumpers when they should. Take the game off PRO dude.

2k13 is the greatest basketball game ever made. If you don't agree your delusional and not worth arguing with.

Simple.
As.
That.

There are plenty of missed layups and jumpers, though it seems a bit easier this year to hit an open jumper this year.

My guys miss open layups when I née them most though-- at the wrong end of a run.

I don't remember 2K8 very well but the series has played like simulation basketball on All Star and above when it comes to defended layups and jumpers.

Re: NBA 2K8: The Turning Point In the 2k Series

If your guy isn't a good finisher in the paint he won't finish.

Try running a PnR with CP3 and Ronny Turiaf try to finish with Turiaf through a contact layup MISS. Run a PnR with Deron Williams and Reggie Evans try finishing through contact with Reggie MISS.

Now run a PnR with CP3 and Blake try finishing through contact usually SUCCESS. Run the PnR with Felton/Kidd/Melo/Jr Smith and Amare, Amare will usually finish through contact.

If the player can finish in real life 7/10 he will finish in the game. It's completely realistic.

Try finishing with Steve Nash in the paint over a big man
Then try finishing with Deron Williams or Rondo through contact over a big man, you'll probably get a foul called, and 1 or a made tough bucket.

Again the game is fine.
