The AI can definitely mess with you sometimes (you throw a bounce pass to a 7-footer being fronted by a guard) but players IRL do dumb stuff like that sometimes too. If you keep the ball in the hands of the better rated passers you will see it less.

But overall when I hear these complaints I think people tend to underestimate the difficulty of throwing any kind of pass against NBA defense -- there are many NBA players who can barely do it. Watch Brandon Bass try to make a pass in traffic some time.

And when I review my own game footage on gametrack it sometimes surprises me how many questionable passes don't get picked off because the AI saved me from myself.
Most of the time it's the passing animation that is tottally inapropriate. Like on a fastbreak why would I want to do a passing animation that takes 1 second and a half when my passing window is like half a second? Or that behind the back pass on the perimeter for no reason that results in the ball going out of bounds... That kind of stuff. A lot of the time it starts with a bad/inapropriate passing animation.

Because the "pro" gamers complained about points in the paint.
It never used to be difficult when it first came out

It's ridiculous when I throw a long pass to a guy who's running up court on the sideline, wide open, and it turns out to be a fade route in to the third row.

Re: WHy is passing so difficult?

The passing in 2k is a game of chance. There is very little control over it and you don't really know what kind of animation you're going to get. Its like an rpg where you can randomly get critical hits or misses. While we have a ton of control over shooting and dribbling, passing is more like a Final Fantasy battle. The computer decides whether you pass it fast or slow, if your man bobbles the ball or not, whether he cuts randomly or not, or if you do a wraparound or pass the ball off a defender's back.

How can this get better? By giving us more manual passing options. If we have a smidgen of the number of options that shooting and dribbling get, that would be enough. The ability to control pass animation speed, overhead lobs, and wraparounds or straight passes would make passing more skill based and more engaging. Also the passing button is still random and the directional passing has gotten less accurate this year for whatever reason.

I feel this should be the main thing that this game should focus on improving. If it comes out next year and passing is still a game of chance, but dribbling and shooting get the usual amount of attention, that would make it three years in a row of sub-par passing.

I HATE this. It ruins so many good fast break opportunities.

This probably happens because of the rampant cherry picking.

And I agree with the OP, it does seem like the easiest of passes get picked off by super human defenders. I could be making a simple pass to the perimeter and it somehow goes where it's not supposed to making me wonder just WTF happened.

its kind of frustrating but before the patch people would abuse full court passes every time down the floor and it made the game completely unrealistic and cheesy.

I totally agree. Good post. And the bolded is the reason I'm going to continue to complain about the passes every chance I get. It's been 3 years in a row that the passing has terrible. 2k needs to focus on this aspect of the game ASAP!!!
