Just picture it like this: Take any player and simply change his position. Make Westbrook a SF, Lebron a PG and Kobe a PF...their OVR change completely. But let them start at their original position and there will be no difference at all. No real rating has changed.

Simply put, OVR is a way of adding ratings to give a rough indicator of a player's total ability. But the way individual values contribute to the total varies from position to position.
Which is why your store analogy does not apply. In your example every item you buy contributes in the same way to the total. That's not the case with how OVR is calculated.
I get why you say it has some meaning...but my issue is not association logic, but the way many gamers (and apparently 2k devs) approach ratings.
Look at the latest roster update thread.. "Chandler deserves an 83, Shumpert needs to be 72-75...".

Another way to illustrate my point: Let's imagine there's a player rated 80 OVR. And since I've watched a few highlight reels and also wear a jersey of this player, he deserves a boost to 85 overall.

Now the thing is, there are more than one way to achieve this, which will tell you nothing about the player at all:
1) 2k changes the OVR formula, so the player is rated 85 with the same individual values. Nothing is different regarding the player's performance.
2) Change any ratings resulting in a boost to 85, which gives you no indication of a player's abilities. Maybe increasing mid/3pt to 90 results in the same change to overall like boosting vertical/dunk...

I know what you mean talking about association. The game needs a way to evaluate players to generate lineups and manage trades and so on, I get that. But this necessary internal value should not be turned in a way for actual gamers to rank players, because it results in completely pointless roster talk.
Take the Football Manager series. There's an internal value called "current ability", which is not even visible during actual gameplay. Instead you have to evaluate players based on their abilities, which is the way to go for 2k14 in my opinion.
Oh for in game performance ? Oh nah it's not important at all I agree. Guys under 75 light me up often. Yeah you don't need an overall for that.
