Re: Do you play ON-BALL DEFENSE? Say why or why not

On-ball all day the CPU is the easiest to score on, no matter what level you play they fall for any up & under move, or pump fake then shoot animation. If I see someone play off-ball on me I immediately take them into the post. I only go off-ball during pick & roll situations, as I wait till see if my CPU teammate will switch or stay with his man, then go right back to checking the ball handler. If i'm not feeling lazy I usually go in the defensive setting & switch everything, so I can just check the ball handler at all times.

The key to playing off-ball defense is shading the player towards the help defense and try to cut off the opposite angle. If a player is on the wing, I'm shading towards the middle of the lane to force him to go into the middle where the help is waiting, then my job is to cut off the base line. Most guys don't think that way and constantly moving the guy around, till he's out of position. It works offline & online against CPU or User.

The simplest of basketball strategy, just don't over think too much and you'll be fine. A lot of guys anticipate too much, I can be standing still dribbling and the guy will run right by me and I haven't even moved yet. just because he's too eager.

Re: Do you play ON-BALL DEFENSE? Say why or why not

I consider myself a sim player so I definitely always play on the ball. I could never see myself playing offball. I don't really trust the cpu to defend for me, and atleast if I make a mistake it is on me and not the cpu. I find it sort of unfair when people play offball and let the cpu defend. For instance playing someone on hall of fame and having them let the cpu guard you when they are almost telepathic on that difficulty is not right. I feel like it is me vs. you so why are u letting the cpu do the defense for you. So I always play on ball even though defense lacks behind offense in nba 2k. The defense needs to be thoroughly improved in nba 2k14.

I play on-ball but there are times when you have to switch off-ball to put your help defender in the right place. Hate when i force my opponent to the baseline and the help defense is late.

Yes, for a couple of reasons. One is because I can't simply just watch the CPU play my defense. My opponent wants to play me, not the CPU. He can do that offline.

Like others said, it's much more rewarding locking down someone instead of letting the CPU do it while I camp on someone else. It's just what I am used to in any sports game trying to user everything.

If I can tell someone is playing offball D,
I am going to punish the CPU in the post especially if I am playing with Kobe. Just don't understand how people just sit there watching the CPU play their D.

This is my reason as well. I play on-ball 80% of the time according to the VIP stats.

Re: Do you play ON-BALL DEFENSE? Say why or why not

1. Couldn't care less if you play off-ball or on-ball
2. I'm not switching players every 3 seconds just to appease you
3. 1vs1 doesn't = 1vs1. It means 2 users controlling 5 players each
4. Sometimes I want to use Scottie Pippen and only Scottie Pippen
5. Sometimes I want to use Sefolosha and only Sefolosha
6. Sometimes I like ice cream, sometimes I like cake
7. If you want to force people to play on-ball D or get annoyed when people don't, nba 2k has included that option for you -- play teamup and blacktop.

I don't think any of us have bashed no on ball users... The question is why do u, or don't u..... We get you like to play off ball but why? I find it a disadvantage to play off ball unless u really can't contain ur man then I understand fully

Re: Do you play ON-BALL DEFENSE? Say why or why not

I never run zone under any circumstances, and I play on or off ball depending on the situation and the player. If someone is a dribble heavy or iso heavy player then I will discourage the isolation by bringing a big over to the strong side of the floor and guard home plate. If someone runs alot of plays, or is using a weak ball handler then I try to play tight on ball to disrupt the offense.

Versitility is the key to a good defense.

When playing online, it is good to mix in some zone and offball here and there depending on how your opponent plays. But IMHO, playing onball is the most effective way to defend shots and it is more fun than sitting back offball. 2K also confirmed that user controlled defense gives an added percentage in successfully defending the shot.

Do you primarily play onball? Why or why not?
