Perhaps what I was wondering was how are the rankings come bye - I don't care about the upcoming years (sorry, didn't make that clear).

The reason for the question is that since my team is in the 90s I'd like to know how that number is come bye. Can a team move up by losing a close game to a very good team? OR is it strictly winning or losing?

If you don't care about the upcoming years (which affect your grade) and you only care about the current season, then it's just the coach's poll that is used so you don't even need to look at championship contenders and can simply look at the polls. For the polls, you win you go up, you lose you go down, just like always.
