Salary Cap Spreadsheet

I posted this in another thread, but considering that salary cap issues are being mentioned a lot lately, I might as well post it again in its own thread so people see it.

I'm very careful with my cap. Much of this is because I played PC Madden the last few years and had a utility to set the cap, so I randomly set it each year, so it was a challenge to negotiate it. So the first thing I did when I got head coach was whip out the old spreadsheet I made to keep track of everything.

It tracks by position... you enter the name of the player and the amount he's paid. Enter it in millions of dollars (so a 4,200,000 contract would be entered as 4.200). In the middle section, enter your cap information... dead money (cap penalties, if you prefer), league cap, etc., and then look at the right hand box to see how much you're paying at each position, and how much you SHOULD be paying at each position.

Hopefully somebody finds it useful.

Re: Salary Cap Spreadsheet

I'll plug this in to my dynasty it should be fun to see where I am over spending. I'm sure though that right now it will be my secondary. As it stands currently with my skins career, I have 4 1st rounders back there. (LaRon Landry, Carlos Rodgers, Aquib Talib and Kenny Phillips) If they shut down he NFC east passing attacks it might be worth it.

Re: Salary Cap Spreadsheet

A few definitions...

% of Pos: Percentage of Position. The percentage of the total money spent at a given position that a single player makes. I like to have starters right around 60-80% of their position, depending on the frequency of rotation.

Total Payroll: Self explanitory, the total money being spent at the moment on players on the roster.

Dead Money: Real world term for what EA creatively calls "Cap Penalty". Why they can't use the term the NFL uses, I have no idea. Copy from in-game Cap Status menu.

Adjusted Cap: Salary cap minus dead money... essentially, the salary cap as it applies to you. Copy from in-game Cap Status menu.

Free Space: The amount of money available to spend

Guideline: The recommended percentage to be spent at a given position. Based on Bill Walsh's recommendations in "Finding the Winning Edge". These numbers can be edited, be make sure they equal 100% or your other numbers will be off.

Target: The positional cap. It is recommended you do not exceed this number at the stated position.

Actual: The amount of money you are currently spending at that position.

Adjust By: The amount of space you have at that position. If the number is negative, you are over your positional cap.

% Space: The percentage of the positional cap that is open. If the number is negative, you are over your positional cap.

Warning: I just noticed I neglected to lock the formula cells. Make sure you don't type in anything you shouldn't be typing in. I'll get a new version with the cells locked tomorrow sometime.

Re: Salary Cap Spreadsheet

Well, I used your spread sheet and like I figured too much of my money is spent on OL(-25%), Secondary(-67%) and RB's(-25%). At least I see where I could use a little triming of the fat. Thanks it was nice to see where the money goes.

Re: Salary Cap Spreadsheet

It's very nice and laid out for me. Now I know who I should be targetting in Free Agency and what not
