Yeah, it's the new currency. For 150 marks you can buy the year two versions of any year one exotic you already own (Suros, Red Death, Hawkmoon, etc) and it will be the 290 version. Year 1 exotics are 170 damage.

You can get 30 marks daily with the daily heroic and crucible event. 3-5 marks for dismantling legendary gear and Weapons.

You can't play taken king without Destiny. Best bet is to get the $60 version. Comes with all the year 1 content (Vanilla Destiny, Dark Below, House of Wolves) and Taken King. It's a tremendous amount of content. 5 patrol areas, dozens of story missions, 10 strikes and 3 1/2 raids.
