While true, I also didn't really know much about what "countryside" would mean to me until I played Red Dead Redemption six years later. So for me, the cool thing about countryside was the separation between cities. It gave some distance and made you feel like you had to "trek" from one city to another. I know because of limited draw distance they felt farther than they actually were, but still. The screenshots of the countryside early on really made you feel like that exploration was still worth the venture, especially the desert (I remember an article mentioning "the first time they saw the Vegas lights in the distance while driving in the desert," which was more poetic than it really became but still).

The big difference though is that each bit of countryside led to another monumental destination since the game had three major cities. In GTA V, there is Los Santos, and then kind of nothing else. There are fan maps all over the place that redesign the GTA V map, as well as add their own versions of San Fierro and Las Venturas, that give me hope that is the kind of way they will go for GTA VI. I'm also hoping that they learn someday that it's not either "city" or "countryside" and they can work out the sprawl a bit better, but I guess it's more about giving each area function than anything else.

EDIT: Maps like these are just crazy (the bottom one also has Liberty City and Vice City):

GTA 3 is my second favorite after San Andreas. GTA IV Liberty City is closer to real life NYC, but I love the GTA 3 version. It's a great map, and I like the overall creepiness of the game. The soundtrack is perfect for that era.

Nothing beats driving through Portland on a gray day listening to Lucy's "Forever".

Thanks to taxi missions I was able to memorize that map with ease, although that's not really a very large task.

I still just love GTA III as the upgrade to GTA 2's top-down view. It came out not too much longer after I first saw Gone in 60 Seconds, and things like having a lockup and such were just such an excitement to explore. Yes, Driver 2 was already a thing, but that game had clear restrictions that the GTA franchise doesn't. Plus, Chatterbox to this day is still the best radio station this series has to offer.

This was also back in the day when I was using cheat codes all the time, and I absolutely could still button through the cheats for full ammo, health, armor, clear wanted level, etc. Being a 13-year-old kid, this is the way I played games at the time haha.

Yep, vintage Lazlow before he started turning into a degenerate. Although his OG LOC interview on Entertaining America was a classic.

Re: Your favorite Grand Theft Auto?

probably 4th part. Atmosphere of it is on a high level, gta 5 is kinda similar to 3rd mafia, no feelings to that game

Hands Down Vice City is the GOAT. I mean the storyline and the characters buildup and everything was just great. And I just watched the movie Scarface(1983) a few months back and realized that the game is so much inspired by this movie.

I loved the "fake" songs in III and LCS. Craig Grey "Fadeaway" and Dezma "Life is but a mere supply" made III special for me.
