Re: What do you do?

I am the Senior Marketing Manager -- Clearing & Fulfillment -- for a Marketing Support Services company that specializes in Clearing, Distribution, Sweepstakes Administration and Warehousing. I've been here for about 4 years now and oversee an internal and external staff at our HQ here in Metro Detroit as well as overseeing satellite facilities in Arizona, Texas and Nevada.

Oh... and I've been at OS for 5 or 6 years writing for less than peanuts for a dictator of a boss...

That's right, the older we get its much harder to walk away from a job especially when you have a family and bills. I'm going 6 1/2 years at the company I'm at.

Re: What do you do?

I had 15 years working for a newspaper as a sales manager in circulation. That company started big time layoffs, so I applied and managed to get into law school, working still and going to school at night. I was 1/2 way through law school when I got laid off. Six months later I got a job as a law clerk in a private firm and they kept me on as an attorney after I graduated.
I stayed at that firm about another year. Then I took a job with New York State where I have been the last 7 years. Civil service suits me well. I like the job security, benefits and regular hours.

I'm a sheet metal mechanic. The next time your in Wal-Mart or any big time company like that, take a look up in the ceiling and you'll see huge metal pipes, they are called spiral pipe. That's what I make for a living. I also make duct work and operate a $300,000 plasma arc.

Re: What do you do?

I'm one of the rare but growing number of stay-at-home dads!

I earned a degree in Civil Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines and promptly went to work for the Kansas Department of Transportation. However, after being stuck in small town hell I had to quit my job. My wife (aka my "sugar mama" as some here say ) then found a software engineering job that paid triple my salary and still pays double what an engineer with our experience earns (say three years) and I'm able to stay home and raise our now three year old son.

I know it's not the "normal" thing to do, and we are a pretty liberal family, but I would honestly not change my "job" for anything. Watching my son grow and learn, fostering his interest in the world is the greatest joy one can experience. I'm going to start pursuing a degree in either architecture or an M.S. in Chemical Engineering and go back to work once my son is full-time in school, likely as a professor at a junior college or teaching upper level high school.
