Re: The OS Guitarists thread

For those that taught themselves what sources did you guys use once you got the basics down? I'd like to dive deeper into scales, riffs/licks, and progressions, but would like to do it in a way that teaches me the mechanics/theory so I can transpose and create things myself.

Jackson DK2
1974 Fender Acoustic...not sure on the model though.

Re: The OS Guitarists thread

What do you guys suggest to do to improve my speed? I can't play most things up until the solo and then it all goes to crap because I can't play as fast as I want to. My fingers just don't want to move with speed!

I taught myself how to play about 15 years ago and have been playing intermittently since then. It's not like I practice everyday but I feel like I play enough where I should have atleast some speed.

For example, I can play lead of Sweet Child of Mine up until the last solo with where the wah pedal kicks in. Then I have to switch to rhythm and do that to finish the song. It just gets frustrating since I do that to pretty much every song I know. Any tips on what to do?

Re: The OS Guitarists thread

Break down the solo into manageable sections. Practice each section separately gradually increasing speed as you learn the movement and muscles remember the forms. Then put it altogether.

Re: The OS Guitarists thread

It sucks, I feel like I've hit a wall in my playing and it just isn't very enjoyable for me anymore. A break from playing might be what I need, but I don't have that drive or motivation to play anymore. I know I'm a good guitar player, but I've realized that I'll always be a drummer and I enjoy playing drums significantly more, especially live.

Re: The OS Guitarists thread

I like rotating between things. Last night I learned Up to Me by Jethro Tull, but before that I hadn't played in at least a week. I'll go through periods where all I play is the acoustic and then jump to the electric.

I really want to actually educate myself this Summer on music theory and song structure.

Re: The OS Guitarists thread

It's interesting to hear you guys say that. I have a guitar near me at all times outside of work. I even take one with me on vacations.
