Barry Sanders, Head Coach

I started a thread a few years back with Washington, but it didn't last long. This time I thought I would set up a few house rules to make sure that it was more realistic. I am using a created coach, Barry Sanders, and will be starting with the Carolina Panthers. Here are a few House Rules:

1. I must draft the GM recommendation (In year 1 I have one veto, year 2 I have two, etc.).
2. I must utilize the majority of my payroll.
3. No trading rookies.
4. Individual Workouts are for 1-2 round prospects only.
5. I must complete a majority of the season goals.

GROSS DISGUSTED WITH FRANCHISE TAG

Jordan Gross was franchised today by the Carolina Panthers and will start at Left Tackle, the team announced. He will receive 7.03 million this year, and hopes to sign a long term contract. Since he will be moving to the left side, the team also announced that Travelle Wharton will slide over and start at Right Tackle.

FREE AGENCY PERIOD

The team is beginning with a $39.27 million Salary Cap, which means I need to get that cap number down to about 10-15 million before the draft. I also need to improve the talent pool obviously, as the team has some superstars, but then the fall of is really great. Heading into Free Agency I will look to add some draft picks, and will test the trade market with both LE Julius Peppers, as well as K Kasay. I am also going to try to make a trade to get TE Tony Gonzalez from the Chiefs. I will not overpay, nor will I simply give my players away. I am looking for great value.

LE Julius Peppers: I will accept nothing less than a 1st round selection, and likely would need another pick in the mid to late rounds.

K John Kasay: I think a 3rd or 4th round pick would suffice, although again, I would like to get multiple picks.

TE Tony Gonzalez: I won't give up a 1st round pick, so I may be out of luck.

2008 Draft Picks (Current)
1 (13)
2 (43)
3 (67) from NY Jets
3 (74)
4 (106)
6 (175)
7 (206)

Season Goals:
LG > 85
TE > 85
SS > 85
Draft a Sleeper
Don't Draft a Bust

CAROLINA ADDS SAMUEL, OTHERS
The Panthers made a surprising move in adding Asante Samuel in Free Agency considering that their defensive backs were a position of strength. Other signings seemed to baffle the experts around the league, as the team is looking to make a massive overhaul.

Player OVR (POT) Contract New Cap Status
CB Asante Samuel 92 (92) 5/43.0 (13.0) 31.76

TRADED K J.Kasay to STL for 4 (98) and 09 7th 33.46

TE Alge Crumpler 81 (81) 5/22.0 (5.5) 29.66

MLB Odell Thurman 81 (82) 5/14.0 (3.5) 27.24

C Jeff Faine 87 (89) 3/13.5 (5.0) 23.01

SS Donavin Darius 81 (81) 1/5.2 (1.5) 17.81

DT B. Oshinowo 77 (80) 5/22.0 (5.5) 14.01

LT Todd Steussie 82 (82) 1/1.3 (500k) 12.71

2008 NFL Draft Day 1 : First Round

1 (1) MIA- QB Matt Ryan (Boston College)
1 (2) STL- ROLB Vernon Gholston (Ohio St.)
1 (3) ATL- HB Darren McFadden (Arkansas)
1 (4) OAK- DT Glen Dorsey (LSU)
1 (5) KC- RE Chris Long (Virginia)
1 (6) NYJ- QB Joe Flacco (Deleware)
1 (7) NE- CB Leodis McKelvin (Troy)
1 (8) ARZ- LE Derrick Harvey (Florida)
1 (9) CIN- LT Jake Long (Michigan)
1 (10) NO- Sedrick Ellis (USC)
1 (11) BUF- ROLB Keith Rivers (USC)
1 (12) DEN- LOLB Jerod Mayo (Tennessee)

1 (13) CAR- LG Branden Albert (Virginia) had to use my 1 override on GM who wanted RT Otah.

1 (14) CHI- RT Jeff Otah (Pittsburgh)
1 (15) DET- CB Dominique Cromartie (Tenn. St.)
1 (16) BLT- LT Ryan Clady (Boise St.)
1 (17) KC- LT Chris Williams (Vanderbilt)
1 (18) HOU- RT Gosder Cherilus (Boston College)
1 (19) SEA- HB Rashard Mendenhall (Illinois)
1 (20) TB- CB Mike Jenkins
1 (21) WSH- CB Aqib Talib (Kansas)
1 (22) DAL- HB Felix Jones (Arkansas)
1 (23) PIT- CB Antoine Cason (Arizona)
1 (24) TEN- LE Lawrence Jackson (USC)
1 (25) BLT- HB Chris Johnson (ECU)
1 (26) BLT- CB Brandon Flowers (Virginia Tech)
1 (27) SD- DT Kentwan Balmer (North Carolina)
1 (28) CLE- RE Philip Merling (Clemson)
1 (29) TB- DT Ty Laws (Notre Dame)
1 (30) GB- LT Sam Baker (USC)
1 (31) NYG- CB Tracy Porter (Indiana)

The Baltimore Ravens were the talk of the day selecting 3 different picks in the first round after trading down from pick 8. They were able to grab a stud LT Clady, HB Johnson, and CB Flowers.

I was hoping I wouldn't have to use my override in the 1st round, but I don't currently have a LG on the roster and Albert was who I had set my sights on. I used a individual workout to unlock him (94) potential. My other individual workouts were used on D. Harvey (91), J. Mayo (88), K. Phillips (92), L. Jackson (88), and K. Rivers (93)

This means I head into the remainder of the draft relying on my GM to make all of the selections. Fortunately, next season I will have 2 overrides.
