The Best Football Video Game of All Time Project

I thought it would be easier to have a thread for this. I just posted a blog http://www.operationsports.com/chart...e-of-all-time/ about a project that I just started to find the best football video game ever. I will also list them in a top order, one to whatever. This is just for fun and just my opinion. I love football gaming and I will not be bashing a certain game or over rating any just to prove a point. This is just something I love to do.

Keep in mind that I am 35 years old and played these games when they were new. So I realize how revolutionary things were at the time but, I'm trying to judge based on current standards more than how good they were at the time.

Obviously Madden will be some of the games but, I felt this forum fit better than the Madden forum because a majority of the games aren't Madden titles.

This will be partly a trip down memory lane and part grading. I love the history of gaming stuff so this is a blast for me to do. I want to show how far we have come and how good some of these old games are.

10 Yard Fight (1985 NES)

Gameplay/AI: Does not use 11 players on each side or many real football rules. No plays to chose from and just basic run with the QB and pick it. That's pretty much it. The controls are very easy to learn as is the case with most NES games.
The AI is Pretty bad. You can just do the same thing over and over. Not a challenge to beat the CPU. You own players are about the same.

Depth: Not much depth to this game. You chose from 5 difficulty levels and you just play as a generic team. No real teams or NFL/NCAA license.

Modes: Just one mode. 1 game against the cpu or a human.

Fun Factor: Although it's not the worst football game I've played it's pretty close. I remember as a kid somewhat enjoying this but, it doesn't hold up very well at all.

Presentation: No real voices or any real presentation to speak of. Has some running sounds, a ref's whistle, and crowd noise.

Tecmo Bowl (NES 1989)

Gameplay/AI:

-compared to Ten Yard Fight, Tecmo Bowl was much better in the gameplay department. The game is very easy to control. It is fast and arcade like. You have 4 plays to choose from and the defense can pick the same four plays. The idea is to try and guess the play on defense and if you do you pretty much can tackle the offense for a loss every time.

-The game is very easy to pick up and play. The passing and run game is pretty basic. On passes you just look to see who is open and throw it. The cpu defensive player never cover an uncovered player. If a player is covered and you pass it to them it's a pick 99% of the time.

-The CPU is pretty easy to beat and as you win and move on to the next team they get more difficult. The AI is about what you would expect from a 8 bit NES game.

Depth:

-You get to pick from 12 teams of real NFL cities but, this game doesn't have the NFL license. You do have real NFL players because it was one of the first video games with the NFLPA license. This was awesome at the time. The game provides some stat's for the players below their name in the game but, not sure how accurate some of them are. For instance it shows the Mike Singletary having 20 sacks. Maybe that was his career stat's but, he didn't have that for a year. The players are rated based on stat's and popularity.

-There is no franchise mode or even a real season mode. Pretty standard for the time. You can play a "season" where you choose a team and play the other 11. If you win you move to the next team. The game gives you a password so you can continue at a later time. As you move to the end it calls games "play off" games and you have a championship game as the last game.

-You only play with 9 players per team.

Modes:

-You can play against the cpu or play against a friend.

-As was said before you can play a "season" mode.

Fun Factor:

-Although this game is pretty arcade like and not a realistic football game it is still pretty darn fun. I'm not sure I would want to play a full season but, it is much more fun than "10 yard fight". It is easy to play and controls great. You can make pretty much any juke move you need without the need for a complicated control scheme. It's still a blast to get Chicago or LA and run all over the field with Walter Payton and Bo Jackson.

Presentation:

-The game has catchy music. No commentary. At that time it was better to just have music because of how bad it could be to try and use commentary. At the end of the game you had the score on a news paper type graphic. That is about it. Most games in those days didn't have much in the way of presentation.

Grade:

-This was the second Football game I ever owned and at the time it was the best. I loved it. It was fun and addictive. Like most 8 bit games it doesn't hold up to well compared to games today but, it's still a lot of fun. If you haven't played this game before give it a shot. It will give great perspective of how far football gaming has come.

I hated 10 Yard Fight after my friend got ColecoVision and we played Super Action Football which by the standards then was much better and at least somewhat seemed like football.

I never played that game. I need to look it up. I didn't have a ColecoVision. Not hard to be better than 10 Yard Fight. Lol

As a side note,I kinda dispised Coleco for making bad versions of their games for the 2600,particularly Donkey Kong,to try to boost ColecoVision because of their far superior versions.

I played 10 Yard Fight recently to record footage for a review, and I actually had a bit of fun with it. I've played much worse. There are a lot of SNES licensed football games that barely function. 10 Yard Fight is super slow and doesn't really represent football well, but it's fun in it's own strategic way.

Do you have any idea were I can find the play call sheet for NFL Football for NES by LJN. The game is kind of cool but, useless with out the plays
