Re: The Colonial Football League

Colonial Football Recap Week 1.

First, lets take a look at the league table after week 1. Libran and their impressive four goal outburst against Canceron find themselves atop the table. Sagittaron, led by Zlatan Ibrahimovic, occupy the second spot. It's only one week into the season, so there is plenty of time for those teams near the bottom to get some wins and pick up some points.

Now it's time to take a look at the Week 1 MVP and the Colonial Performance of the Week. They belong to Zlatan Ibrahimovic and his hat trick against Gemenon.

Our keeper of the week is Scorpia's Diego Alves. He lost his clean sheet late in the contest off a fluke goal by Picon. He kept the talent Picon offense in check for most of the game, and for that, he's the week 1 Keeper of the week.

Moving on to the rumor mill, there's nothing to report on the trade or free agency front as the season is still only one week old and just off the entry draft.

Only one injury to report after the first week of action. Hatem Ben Arfa suffered a deep tissue bruise to his thigh. He has been ruled out this week for Leonis. Brad Davis is expected to get the start in his absence. No word on whether or not Ben Arfa will miss more than this week's match.

Finally, this week's slate of matches looks like it will produce some real entertainment.

Aquarion will open their home stadium against Virgon in the opening match. The Whalers lost a heartbreaker to Leonis last week, while Virgon drew with Tauron. Virgon's Bastian Schweinsteiger looks to go toe to toe with Neymar in what should be a relatively high scoring match.

Aerilon travels to Picon for the Panther's home opener. Picon's offense was stifled against Scorpia, and Casillas gave up two goals to the Stingers. He looks to have his hands full again this week as Xabi alonso leads Aerilon to Picon.

Match 3 features two of the more dominant teams from week 1. Scorpia heads on the road to take on Libran. It was a total team effort by Libran to score four goals, but Scorpia really needs to focus on stopping David Vila. Libran has to worry about stopping Klaas-Jan Huntelaar. He found the back of the net twice against Picon, and is surely hungry for more.

Sagittaron's home opener is match #4 on the slate, as Tauron comes to town. Tauron's task is obvious: Shut down Ibrahimovic. The Archers need to be mindful of Ezequiel Lavezzi. He was quiet against Virgon, but is a threat to score from anywhere on the pitch.

Gemenon and Canceron follow them. The bottom two teams in the table are really going to be looking for three points to get some momentum moving forward. Gemenon will look to their keeper Tim Howard to anchor a defense that was picked apart by Sagittaron last week. Canceron's defense looked equally woeful, and will call upon their own Keeper Joe Hart to try and stop the bleeding.

Finally, Leonis and Caprica square off on Leonis. The Wildcats won with a thrilling last-minute goal last week, but will have a tall order shutting down Caprica's Arjen Robben, especially since Hatem Ben Arfa will be missing the game for the Wildcats. Caprica needs to figure out a way past Hugo Lloris, the Leonis keeper.

Couple quick operation notes. I found out this afternoon that I'll be out of town over the Easter weekend starting tomorrow (which is why this is text and not a video-too much stuff to do and now way too little time to do it). Broadcasting Friday isn't going to happen. I'm debating whether or not I just want to put all the match videos up on youtube, or wait to broadcast on Monday.

Re: The Colonial Football League

First off, apologies on the delay. Easter weekend was a little crazy. Something got corrupted with the Caprica/Leonis match while exporting and that video refuses to play. I deleted the source video after exporting but before checking (stupid, I know, but I was in a hurry). So no video for that one. The stats are all correct, though.

Video on Demand for the week 2 games.

Tauron at Sagittaron

Week 2 Recap

Virgon @ Aquarion

The first contest of the day featured two squads looking for their first 3 points of the season. Both found the back of the net twice last week, but those tallies weren't good enough for either to come away with the victory.

Bastian Schweinsteiger, who scored the tying goal late in Virgon's last contest, opened up the scoring in this match in the 9th minute. Lukas Podolski did most of the hard work, dribbling through two defenders and leaving a pass forward for Schweinsteiger to finish from the corner off the 6 yard box.

Video of the goal

Aquarion leveled it in the 44th minute with Thiago's brilliant individual effort. He received a throw in from the far side of the pitch, dribbled it all the way down to the semi-circle and unleashed a rocket with his right boot that skidded just inside the near post.

Video of the goal

Virgon answered back in the 51st minute, thanks to Van Wolfswinkel. His goal was a story of patience, as he waited for the defense to clear in the box. He drove in from the top of the penalty area and made a beautiful hesitation move that froze the defenders. Two dribbles around the now scrambling Aquarion defense were all Van Wolfswinkel needed to deliver a powerful strike that found the back of the net.

Video of the goal

A mere two minutes later, we were level again. What should have been a simple pass back to the keeper was made much more difficult thanks to the rainy conditions of Aquarion. Viviano slipped as he went to play a ball passed back to him by his defense. A poor clearance resulted, and Whaler striker Gilardino picked up an easy empty net goal.

Video of the goal

Aquarion made Virgon pay for their misstep in the 68th minute. Aquarion served a ball in to Neymar who appeared to be about two yards offside, but the flag stayed down. The Virgon back line all seemed to give up on the play, expecting an offisde flag. This allowed Neymar to get in one on one with the keeper. His shot was saved, but the rebound was picked up by Thiago who drove home the eventual game winner.

Aerilon @ Picon

The Panthers were excited to finally get to come home and open up their new stadium. Aerilon was looking to spoil the party.

Picon broke the ice in the 22nd minute, and Aerilon goalkeeper Sergio Romero has no one to blame but himself. He took a pass back from his defender and intended to pass it back towards the near side. What he didn't see was Picon's Johnson sneaking ahead of the defender for an easy interception. Johnson delivered the shot to the back of the yawning net.

Video of the goal

The Panthers added another in the 27th minute. Frank Lampard made a nice run between two defenders and took a thru ball at the top of the penalty area. He used his first touch to settle it, and his second to scorch it past a diving Romero to the far bottom corner.

Video of the goal

Aerilon finally showed signs of life in the 33rd minute. Sergio Ramos won a challenge in his own attacking corner. After a shake move around his defender, he crossed it to the middle where Xabi Alonso was waiting. Alonso simply had to turn and shoot to bring Aerilon back within one.

Video of the goal

Whatever the Thresher's head coach said in the locker room at halftime, it worked. It took only 90 seconds before Aerilon tied the game out of the half time break. Aerilon took the opening kick off and dribbled it straight into Picon territory. From there, a simple cross and header by Edinho tied the match at 2.

Video of the goal

Picon would not let Aerilon spoil their home opener, though. In the 67th minute Frank Lampard found the magic again. Drenthe assisted on a nice pass into the box, and Lampard did the rest.

Scorpia @ Libran

Two teams at the top of the table look to solidify that position in this contest. Libran exploded for four goals last week, while Scorpia scraped by on a one goal margin.

After a very solid defensive half-hour of football, the visitors opened up the scoring. Jara received a pass near the midfield stripe and drove it all the way down to the Libran penalty area. His shot was saved masterfully by Gianluigi Buffon, but the rebound was easy pickings for Klass-Jan Huntelaar.

Video of the goal

Libran returned fire just a minute later. Mirroring the Scorpia goal, Libran's started in the midfield. Elm made a beautiful back-heel pass to Landon Donovan as he streaked past. Donovan simply outsprinted the rest of the defense and put it on frame past a diving Diego Alves.

Video of the goal

Just before the whistle blew for Halftime, Donovan struck again. Once again, Elm recorded the assist, this time chipping the ball over the Scorpia back line. Donovan took possession at the top of the penalty area, and after his first shot was deflected got his own rebound to again beat Alves to the keeper's left.

Video of the goal

Libran had the chance to add another late in the second half, but this time Alves was up to the challenge. The Scorpia offense was not up to the challenge of leveling the match, however, as the Stingers fall to Libran 2-1.

Tauron @ Sagittaron

Sagittaron looked to open their stadium with a victory over the visiting Tauron Bulls. All eyes fell to Zlatan Ibrahimovic as he took the pitch.

It did not take Sagittaron long to find the scoreboard, but it was Danny who made the scoring strike for the Archers. In the fourth minute, Ibrahimovic drew a double team in the box, leaving Danny pretty much alone near the top of the penalty area. Danny took two dribbles and sent a low laser to the back of the net.

Video of the goal

Zlatan would put his stamp on the game just ten minutes later. He received a chip near the top of the penalty area. The Archers striker then made moves around two separate defenders before beating Vorm for a two goal lead.

Video of the goal

That goal seemed to flip a switch for the Bulls. Their defense stepped up and played spectacularly for the remainder of the match.

On the offensive side of things, Tauron got the jolt they needed in the 27th minute. Rossi made an unmarked run directly to the penalty spot, and a simple pass from Park was all it took for Rossi to beat Oliver Baumann and bring Tauron back within one.

Video of the goal

The Bulls picked up the intensity near the 57th minute, and threw an absolute barrage of shots at the Sagittaron net. Oliver Baumann was up to the challenge, making a number of spectacular diving saves in a row.

As the clock hit 90, the official decided that there would be one minute of stoppage time. About a minute and five second where what the Bulls would need to equalize. Bergessio drove towards the end line and took a shot. Baumann made another great save, but could not hold on to the rebound, which Park drove home to steal a point for Tauron.

Video of the goal

Sagittaron takes a heartbreaking draw 2-2.

Canceron at Gemenon

The second to last matchup of the day featured two teams desperately looking for redemption after their performances last week. Gemenon allowed three goals against Sagittaron, only to be one-upped by Canceron who allowed four against Libran.

Canceron looked like they would be the ones to redeem themselves in the early going. Dominating possession, the Hydras scored first in the 9th minute on a Ronaldinho goal driven from the penalty spot. Gemenon's defense seemed to forget about marking the striker in the middle of the pitch, and he made them pay.

Vide of the goal

The two teams had a defensive battle for the rest of the half and entered the locker rooms at 1-0 for the Hydras.

The second half belonged to Gemenon.

Carlos Martinez tied it just a few minutes after the whistle blew. Gemenon won a corner, which was headed out of the area by the Canceron defense. Van Ginkel tried to hold the box and send a shot back in. His shot was off target, but Martinez was waiting at the corner of the 6 to redirect it back on net with his head.

Video of the goal

In the 53rd minute the twins struck again. Fagner intercepted a pass near midfield and dribbled it forward. His chip sailed beautifully over the heads of the Canceron back line to Wayne Routledge, barely onside, as he drove it home past Joe Hart.

Video of the goal

Danny Welbeck joined the goal parade in the 57th minute. Once again, the Canceron back line just failed to make the striker as he ran right past the line on a ball served in and beat Joe Hart one on one.

Video of the goal

Welbeck would add his name to the sheet one more time just two minutes later. He received the pass from Routledge in the semi-circle, and simply dribbled past his man to the corner of the 6 and sent the shot low past a diving Joe Hart.

Video of the goal

For the second time in as many weeks, Canceron surrenders four goals and falls to Gemenon 4-1.

Caprica @ Leonis

In stark contrast to the high scoring game before it, Caprica and Leonis played a defensive battle that came right down to the final shot.

The lone goal in the contest came in the 23rd minute when Olivier Giroud took a pass near the corner of the penalty area, turned to shoot, and banked it in off the far post. Caprica's keeper Beto could only turn and shake his head as he watched the ball hit the post but still go in.

The two keepers were spectacular from that point forward, not allowing any goals and making a number of saves each. In the end, Caprica couldn't muster a goal, and was on the receiving end of the first clean sheet in league history: 1-0.

Week 3 preview

Scorpia @ Aerilon
No broadcast

The Threshers of Aerilon enter this contest looking to pick up their first victory of the season. One major problem the Threshers have had this year is playing from behind. It took a late-game goal to draw level with Caprica in week one, and they fell behind three different times to Picon, being unable to level the score a third time. They need to jump out early if they want to be successful against Scorpia.

The Stingers come in off a loss to Libran in a low-scoring affair. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar has been the entire offense for Scorpia thus far this, scoring all three of their goals. The Stingers should look to spread the offense around.

Libran @ Caprica
No broadcast

Top of the table meets bottom of the table as the league leading Libran Thunder journey to Caprica City to take on the winless Buccaneers. Caprica needs to get more help from Arjen Robben, who has been noticeably quiet in the team' first two contests. Two draws are ok at this point in the season, but Caprica really needs three points if they want to start moving up the table.

Libran is just trying to keep the momentum rolling. They are the only team in the league to win both of their first two games. Their offense has come from all over the pitch, and their six goals for leads the league. This is a confident team with a lot of momentum.

Leonis @ Virgon
Kick-off 1:15 pm

Boskirk stadium should be rocking as the home fans try to teach Virgon on to their first win. Leonis comes in as one of the three undefeated teams still on the table. The Virgon United have gotten some great goals from Bastian Schweinsteiger, but the offense has stagnated outside of him. Much like Scorpia, Virgon needs to find someone else to put the ball in the back of the net.

Leonis barely survived Caprica last week, but held on to the clean sheet for the victory. Leonis has the lowest goals against in the leauge, and their sold defense has gotten them to the four points they currently hold.

Sagittaron @ Canceron
Kick-off 2:00 pm

Canceron has allowed 8 goals in two matches, and comes up against the man who is the early favorite to win the league's golden boot. The lapses in defense have been well documented this week. Perhaps more surprising, though, is Canceron's lack of offense. For a team the drafted what looked to be an explosive offensive front, their two goals scored are surely a disappointment for coach Smith.

Sagittaron is upset coming into this match. They feel like they deserve to have 6 points and be sitting atop the table with Libran. Taurons 92nd minute goal stole a point from what was an othewise brilliantly played defensive effort from Sagittaron. The offense may get most of the spotlight, but Oliver Baumann has been spectacular in net, and will be the real reason this team remains at the top of the table for most, if not all of the year.

Picon @ Taruon
Kick-off 2:45 pm

As mentioned above, Tauron enters after a week where they barely salvaged a point against Sagittaron with a miraculous late goal. The Bulls did a great job of shutting down Zlatan Ibrahemovic, and really turned up the defensive pressure after about the ten minute mark. They'll need to keep that defensive intensity against Picon.

The Panthers opened their home stadium last week with an impressive victory over Aquarion. Never trailing, it seemed like any time Aquarion got any bit of momentum it was snuffed out immediately. Picon will need Frank Lampard to keep coming up big in scoring situations, as their young strikers have yet to really make an impact.

Gemenon @ Aquarion
Kick-off 3:30 pm

Gemenon has been the most schizophrenic team in the league thus far, allowing four goals in week one to Libran but then putting four in the net against Canceron. Gemenon fans hope the Libran match was a fluke, and that the Twins have really found their offensive stride.

Aquarion beat Virgon in their home opener last week. It was rainy and sloppy on the pitch. Expect more of the same this week in Heim. Aquarion's greatest advantage may be the ability to use the elements to their advantage. Having Neymar make runs through the defensive lines probably doesn't hurt either.

Edit-Have to cut two games out of the broadcast. My Capture Card apparently decides to randomly stop recording games at half time and not telling me. Anyone useing Mirillis Action know how to fix that? Anyway, I lost two games this week, which I'm quite mad about. I'll put what I have up on youtube later, but for the broadcast I'm only going to use the four full games I have.

Re: The Colonial Football League

Upsets were the theme of week 3 for the Colonial Football League.
The week's matches on demand:
Libran @ Caprica (First half only) - Unedited because it is just the first half and I didn't broadcast it on twitch. My recording device apparently cut out at halftime and didn't notify me.
Picon @ Tauron
Sagittaron @ Canceron
Leonis @ Virgon
Gemenon @ Aquarion

Scorpia @ Aerilon

Aerilon came in hoping their first time performing in front of their home crowd could lift them into the win column. They entered with just one point; earned in a draw with Caprica in week 1. Scorpia also came into this week off a loss, falling to Libran in their previous outing.

The two teams played a very defensively minded first half. Only 5 shots were fired, and just 3 of them were on frame.

Aerilon opened the scoring in the 50th minute. Edinho made a run to the middle of the penalty area, and Jermaine Defoe sent a low pass in. Edinho hit the shot first time and slid the shot past Diego Alves.

The Threshers added on an insurance goal in the 72nd minute. Max Kruse intercepted a pass about 30 yards away from the net. He made a few dribbles towards the near side of the box, then turned and fired. Alves got caught a little flat-footed, and could only watch as the shot went past him.

Scorpia had a few last ditch attempts, but couldn't find the scoresheet. Aerilon wins 2-0.

Libran @ Caprica
The build-up to this one had "blow-out" written all over it. The Libran Thunder entered Atlas Arena as the league-leading squad. Caprica, meanwhile, had managed only a single point in their first two matches.

Caprica did a wonderful job of coming out and establishing a defensive presence and control of the game early. Leonis only managed one shot during the first twenty minutes of the match.

Arjen Robben finally broke through for the Bucs in the 25th minute. He seemingly surprised everyone when he took a shot from 25 yards away. Both defenders on the Libran line gave Robben room, assuming he was going to pass it off. Robben took the window and struck it to the top left corner for the goal.

Caprica would nurse their lead all the way through the second half, scoring a surprising 1-0 victory over Libran.

Leonis @ Virgon

A match of missed opportunities. That's how this one will be remembered. Both teams had their chances, and both teams failed to capitalize.

The first came right away in the second minute. Caligiuri received a pass making a horizontal run through the box. He took one touch and then uncoiled the shot, but it went just wide of the post.
Both keepers were up to task, and each made a number of great saves.

Jozy Altidore had the final chance in the 82nd minute, but sent a great cross in wildly over the crossbar.

In the end, defense won out, and the teams settled for a 0-0 draw.

Sagittaron @ Canceron

Canceron's story has been well documented this week. The league's most porous defense would have their work cut out for them against the league's most prolific shooter. Turns out, the defense was up to the challenge this time.

It was Canceron's offense who managed to break through first. After an extended offensive possession, Fernandinho chipped a ball down towards the near side of the box for Henry. Henry took the pass and centered it, finding Ronaldinho on the back side. A sliding boot put the ball in the back of the net.

Sagittaron tied it in the 43rd minute. Ibrahimovic did what he does best; he dribbled through two defenders and smashed it past the diving keeper.

As the second half wore on, it started to look like it was only a matter of time before Sagittaron added the go-ahead goal. But a turnover in their offensive zone led to a chance the completely changed the momentum of the game.
Following the Sagittaron turnover, Canceron mounted a counter attack. Henry once again found a teammate in the middle of the pitch. Palacio had to do a little more work this time, but he dribbled in right to the front of the net and snuck it past a diving Oliver Baumann.

Canceron rode that momentum wave to an insurance goal just a few minutes later. This one started on the far side of the pitch, as Pastore made a long run along the sideline. It didn't look like he would have much help in the middle to cross it to, but Palacio came on a late run and received the cross with his head. He directed it beautifully into the back of the net for his second goal of the contest.

Canceron's defense wasn't perfect, and Sagittaron had their chances. The Archers outshot the Hydras, but thanks to Joe Hart finally finding his form, Sagittaron didn't find the back of the net again.

Picon @ Taruon

Tauron has played well in their first two matches, but still has yet to notch one in the win column. They hoped their home opener would give them the jolt they needed.

It took a while, but Tauron did manage to break the ice first. In the 56th minute, Rossi put a shot on net from the left side. Casillas made a nice kick save, but the rebound came back out into the box, and Bergessio drove it home for the 1-0 lead.

Picon leveled it in the 68th. There wasn't much fancy about it. It was a corner kick where Tauron simply forgot to mark Lampard in the box, and he headed it in to even the match.

From there the goals came fast and furious.

Ezequiel Lavezzi led the next Tauron charge. His center pass to Rossi was struck to the far post. Rossi didn't get a great strike on it, but did just enough to roll it past the keeper for the go ahead goal.

Picon tied it just five minutes later, in the 79th minute. The Panthers charged forward, catching Tauron's line a little bit too far forward. Tiao hit a through ball for Drenthe, who was clear of the line by a good two yards. One-on-one with the keeper, Drenthe didn't miss.

Tauron regained the lead just a minute later, taking the kick-off down the pitch and scoring almost immediately. Their goal mirrored Picons in a way, as a through ball chipped in was picked up by Cerci, who was at least a yard past the back line. Once again, one-on-one with the keeper, the striker won the battle.

Desperate to at least salvage a point, Picon somehow managed to find the strength to muster the game tying goal in the 85th minute. It started with a great effort by Frank Lampard. He made a sliding challenge to win the ball from the Tauron midfielder, and managed to maintain possession as he got to his feet. Lampard then saw Negredo making a run to the box and chipped him a pass in.

From there, Negredo's own skill was evident, as he used a bit of trickery and chipped the ball of the outstretched keeper for the game tying goal.

Picon does to Tauron what the Bulls did to Sagittaron last week, and steal a point with a late tying goal.

Gemenon @ Aquarion

The final matchup of the week saw another rain-soaked contest on Aquarion. Gemenon was looking to ride the high of their 4 goal performance against Canceron, while Aquarion was trying to build on their own victory against Virgon.

Aquarion showed their comfort in the rainy conditions by scoring an early goal. In the 2nd minute, Lucas made an interception near the far touch line as the Gemenon midfielder slipped. Lucas then dribbled all the way down to the penalty area before launching the shot that beat the keeper.

They added a second goal just 6 minutes later. Olsson possessed the ball in the box, but decided to pull it back out and look for a pass instead. As he was trying to dribble out, the Gemenon defender stuck a foot in trying to loosen the ball, but instead got all shin. The ref decided it was enough to give Aquarion the penalty. Neymar, who missed a penalty in week one, stared down Tim Howard. Instead of the fancy stutter-step he used the first time, Neymar just stepped up and drove it to his right. Howard guessed left, and the lead was 2.

Sensing another blow-out, Gemenon seemed to settle down defensively after that goal. Aquarion kept up the offensive pressure, recording seven shots in the first 45, but no more found the back of the net. Gemenon's offense, however, was simply non-existent for the first half of the match. They only recorded one shot, which wasn't on target.

The Twins did manage to find the back of the net early in the second. Aquarion surrendered a free kick a few yards outside of the penalty area. Cahill curled the free kick towards the spot, and found Welbeck's head. The initial shot hit the post, but ricoched off the keeper Douchez's back and into the net.

Aquarion's defense clamped down for the rest of the match, and they secured their second home win in a row.
