Re: Transcontinental Boxing Federation

TBF February 1970 MONDAY NIGHT FIGHTS results (all 8-rounders ):

(Flyweights) -
#24 Percy Jones W8 (unan) #30 Tae-Shik Kim
The card arguably led with the most exciting fight; the people who showed up on time certainly weren't disappointed. Jones dominated the first round, starting Kim's eye swelling, but Kim roars back to take both the second and third, although by this point, his other eye was swelling as well. Jones then opens a gash above Kim's left eye in the 4th and dominates the 5th. Then Kim storms back, and by the time we head into the 8th, it's up for grabs. Jones summons a reserve of energy and comes out firing combinations in the 8th, dropping Kim for an 8-count at the 56-second mark. Kim pops up quickly and survives the round, but the 10-8 round does him in on the cards, all for Jones. 76-75 77-74 78-73
Jones moves to 1-0 [1816], while Kim's record starts at 0-1 [1784]

#25 Midget Wolgast W8 (unan) #29 Newsboy Brown
The second bout, in contrast, was not nearly as exciting, as Wolgast dominated Brown from start to finish, but never threatened an early night. 78-74 79-74 79-74. Wolgast 1-0 [1816]; Brown 0-1 [1784]

#28 Pongsaklek Wonjongkam KO 4 #27 Vic Darchinyan
Nasty foulfest...a rematch may be ordered in the December discretionary card. Darchinyan stuns Wonjongkam in the second and bloodies his nose. Both fighters commit repeated fouls, and Darchinyan's eyes begins to swell shut. In the 4th, trailing on all cards, Wonjongkam catches Darchinyan, who is counted out at 1:32. Wonjongkam 1-0 (1) [1816] earns a March TC fight; Darchinyan starts at 0-1 [1784]

(Bantamweights) -
#25 Lou Salica KO 1 #36 Little Cezar
Salica entered the ranks of fighters with wins with a vengeance, taking just 58 seconds to drop Cezar and another 10 for the referee to finish counting. That's a March TC fight earned in just 1:08, making Zamora look like a slow starter! Salica 1-0 (1) [1816]; Cezar 0-1 [1784]

#30 Gaby Canizales W8(split) #31 Fili Nava
Gaby Canizales, on the other hand, had a tough time against Fili Nava, who was helped in part by some questionable scoring. At the halfway point, Canizales would have lost a split decision, but the judge who favored him did so by a lot, and he managed to take 3 of 4 rounds on one of the other cards to turn it around in a bout in which the closeness of the scoring was the most exciting thing. 75-78 77-76 78-75
Canizales 1-0 [1816]; Nava 0-1 [1784]

(Featherweights) -
#27 Bobby Chacon KO 7 #29 Steve Cruz
"Schoolboy" Chacon schooled Cruz, knocking him down in the 5th, then again in the 7th. This time, Cruz didn't arise. Chacon 1-0 (1) [1816]; Cruz 0-1 [1784]

#33 Louie Espinoza KO 8 #37 Miguel Acevedo
Limited information available at press time, but word is that Acevedo took a 10-count in the final stanza.
Espinoza 1-0 (1) [1816]; Acevedo 0-1 [1784]

#35 Young Pluto KO 1 #36 Frankie Crawford
Young Pluto has a performance as good as his name, blasting out Crawford and earning a March TC fight. Pluto 1-0 (1) [1816]; Crawford 0-1 [1784]

(Lightweights) -
#25 Lew Tendler W8 (maj) #36 Aladin Stevens
The congoscenti expected an easier time for Tendler, who didn't put it away until the last round (Stevens could have come away with a split draw had he taken the 8th). However, all three officials agree that Tendler took the 8th, and that was enough to give him a verdict that really was too close for comfort, given that some insiders have been expecting him to move quickly through the ranks, or at least into the middle tier. 76-76 77-75 78-74. Tendler 1-0 [1816]; Stevens 0-1 [1784]

#29 Paul Spadafora TKO 8 #33 Deuk-Koo Kim
The card ended as it started - in dramatic fashion. Kim started strong, taking the first two rounds on 2 of the 3 judges' cards. Spadafora mounted a comeback, and most of the rounds were hotly contested through 7, at which point it would have been scored a split draw. But Kim, who lost the 7th on all cards, was fading, and urged by his corner not to leave it up to the judges, Spadafora came out strong in the final round, hurting the game Kim and inducing the referee to step in at 1:57.
Spadafora 1-0 (1) [1816]; Kim 0-1 [1784]

TBF February 1970 TUESDAY NIGHT FIGHTS results (all 8-rounders between fighters making their debuts):
(Note: Henceforth, fighters' ratings will not be published in the schedule or results reports, but instead provided only in the monthly and annual rankings).

(Welterweights) -
#27 Ike Quartey w8 (unan) #31 Maurice Blocker
Scores unavailable at press time, but all judges agreed Quartey got the best of this one.

#35 Jimmy Doyle w8 (split) #37 Otto Cribb
Doyle works his way to a verdict on two cards in a bout with widely disparate scoring, reflecting of the competitive battle and close rounds. 79-73 74-78 77-75

(Middleweights) -
#33 Tony Sibson w8 (split) #35 Antwun Echols
"Sibbo" does just enough to win by, quite literally, the narrowest of margins. A game Echols rallies to take the last round on all cards, but it was too little too late. 77-76 77-76 76-77

#34 Sam Soliman w8 (split) #31 James Schuler
Another split decision, as Soliman starts and finished strong, while Schuler gets the best of the middle rounds. In the end, Soliman does just enough to convince two judges that he deserves the nod, despite Schuler coming through unscathed while Soliman, staggered in the 5th, left the ring with a badly swollen left eye. 77-75 75-77 78-74

#24 Carlos Monzon w8 (unan) #30 Jermain Taylor
Carlos Monzon dominated Jermain Taylor, but you wouldn't know it to look at the fighters after the contest, as he left the ring with a cut over his left eye and a broken nose. Those moral victories were the only ones Taylor recorded, though, losing almost every round. 80-73 79-74 79-74. Per the TDF regulations, Monzon would be eligible to fight in March; however, the medical board has ruled that due to the broken nose, the earliest he'll be able to return in June, slowing his expected climb into the top 20.

(Light-Heavyweights) -
#36 Mike Rossman w8 (unan) #35 Mate Parlov
Mike Rossman drops Parlov twice, but can't put him away en route to cruising to a clean decision victory, despite some occasional successes from Parlov. 77-74 76-75 78-73

#27 Maxie Rosenbloom KO 7 #37 Alvaro "Yaqui" Lopez
Although he knocked out 19 opponents in 272 professional fights in the real world, "Slapsie Maxie" has a knockout percentage of 100% in the TBF, catching Yaqui with a clean shot to bring a surprising end to the proceedings.

#29 Joey Maxim D8 (maj) #32 Lou Bogash
Joey Maxim had to come off the canvas twice to escape with a fortunate draw against a frustrated Lou Bogash. Bogash immediately petitioned for the result to be negated and an inquiry held, or barring that, a mandatory rematch. Commissioner DFO was overheard at a Denny's mumbling something about not giving a crap what happens in the bottom 20.

(Heavyweights) -
#34 Samuel Peter w8 (split) #36 Bob Armstrong
Yet another razor-sharp split decision, as Armstrong repeatedly frustrated Peter's attempts to knock him out early. Peter tired midway through the fight, but despite being unable to put Armstrong down, he rallied to take the last two rounds and the decision. 76-77 77-76 77-76

#24 Muhammad Ali TKO 2 #38 Joe Grim
Muhammad Ali made his long-anticipated TBF debut, and did not disappoint. In the first round, he racked up a 32-0 punch count advantage, before missing a shot in the final 20 seconds of the round, after which a defiant Grim landed a counter left hook. One of those 32 punches also tore a gash over Grim's left eye. In the opening minutes of the 2nd round, Ali landed another 13 unanswered punches, one of which re-opened the cut, at which point the referee had said enough.

Re: Transcontinental Boxing Federation

Just curious, did Grim pass the Will Check (at 2x his Will) when Ali landed more than 25 punches in the opening round? Or do you not use that rule?

I use it, in the optional sense. In other words, I do the Will Check at 2x the fighter's Will rather than giving the automatic TKO. Obviously, from the outcome, you are either not using the rule or you are doing it the same way that I am.

I pretty much use all of the optional rules. I can't think of one off the top of my head that I don't use.

PS Somehow, Ali, 12-3-3 (2), has just 2 stoppages in 12 wins in the UBF. It's been wild, considering his ratings.

I use the optional rule as well; he was 50-50 with the doubled will, and he survived it.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT FIGHTS (All 10-rounders):

#18 Fermin Gomez KO 7 #17 Alejandro Montiel (Fly)
Gomez will move sharply up to knock on the door of the top 10 following his 7th round knockout of Montiel.

#16 Johnny Bredahl w10 (unan) #18 Joseph Agbeko (BW)
Also moving up significantly will be Johnny Bredahl, who knocked Agbeko down in the 1st round for a 9-count, and in the 4th for a 5-count, but couldn't finish him. Both fighters had swelling around their left eyes by the middle rounds, and Agbeko stunned Bredahl in the 5th, but Bredahl was never seriously threatened, though Agbeko took the last two rounds and convinced one judge, mistakenly, that the fight was close. 98-91 97-93 95-94. Bernstein at ringside: 97-91.

#12 Carlos Zarate w10 (unan) #15 Junior Jones (BW)
Carlos Zarate, in his debut, did something he only did three times in real life - win a decision. He bloodied Jones's nose in the second, dropped him for 9 in the fourth, caused his eye to swell and dropped him for 8 in the ninth, and staggered him in the 10th and final round...but couldn't put him away. 97-92 97-91 98-90.
One moment of "game excitement" that the spectators never knew about...in the 5th round, with Jones getting the living hell beaten out of him, he landed a punch that would have been a knockdown - punch landed, and it was under his power rating. But it was a toe-to-toe segment, and Zarate's 99 cancelled the action and put the result on the event chart instead. I was using the excel dice roller, which rolls two six siders, two 20 siders, and two percentile dice simultaneously. So on the next roll, as the percentile dice gave me the even result, I looked at Zarate's 20-sider, which would have dictated the result of the knockdown, and it was under his KO number...Zarate averted a knockout by 1) not losing the ring generalship check, and 2) getting an event instead of a punch missed.

#14 Freddie Miller KO 8 #18 Young Corbett II (FW)
Freddie Miller justified his ranking in the middle of the featherweights' B-group by stopping Corbett in the 8th round, and will get a slight bump higher in March.

#14 Jose Luis Ramirez W10(unan) #17 Willie Ritchie (LW)
A tale in three acts, and questionable scoring. Act 1: Ramirez comes out blazing, stuns Ritchie in the first 40 seconds, drops him for 8-count in the first minute, and cruises to a 10-8 opening round. Act 2: Ritchie wins the next five rounds on Ringside Commentator Al Bernstein's card, opening an almost insurmountable lead. Act 3: Ramirez storms back to take the last four rounds on Bernstein's card, breaking an 85-85 deadlock by winning the 10th by the narrowest possible margin. Epilogue: The judges were watching a totally different fight, and saw Ramirez with a virtually unsurmountable edge back when Bernstein had him trailing by multiple points. Great case for open scoring. Ritchie demands an inquiry. 98-91 97-95 98-92

#13 Manny Pacquiao KO 8 #18 Greg Haugen (LW)
Manny Pacquiao made a long-anticipated debut, dropping Greg Haugen for a 3-count in the opening round, and later stunning him, swelling his left eye, and bloodying his nose, but Haugen hung on gamely, winning two rounds on all cards, and pieces of other rounds. Just when you thought it was going to the cards, Manny pitched a shutout through the 8th, landing 16 unanswered punches, the last three of which (jab-cross-uppercut) dropped Haugen again, and this time there was no getting up.

Zarate was lucky to escape, with that 99 saving him!

Re: Transcontinental Boxing Federation

THURSDAY NIGHT FIGHTS (All 10-rounders):

#12 Kid Gavilan w10 (unan) #18 Dick Eklund (WW)
Fringe top-20 contender Eklund survives but doesn't threaten, as the Cuban Hawk knocks on the door of the top 10. 98-93 99-92 98-93

#12 Tiger Flowers w10 (unan) #19 Peter Manfredo Jr. (MW)
Another unsurprising one-sided affair. Manfredo survives knockdowns in the 5th and 6th (the latter for a 9-count) and is rewarded with a lopsided decision loss. 99-89 99-89 98-89

#14 Sergey Kovalev TKO 6 #16 Doug Jones (LHW)
In contrast to the earlier fights, this was a competitive, evenly matched fight through five rounds. In the 6th, Kovalev comes out blazing, stuns Jones and follows up with a combination against his defenseless rival, and the referee calls a halt to the proceedings. Impressive result from Kovalev.

#16 Gus Ruhlin KO 1 #15 Lorenzo Zanon (HW)
Zanon charges out to the center of the ring pasting Ruhlin with combinations. Ruhlin does next to nothing for two minutes other than try to find his range and measure Zanon, which he does in the final minute. Left hook, right cross and it's lights out for Zanon at 2:39. Ruhlin earns a march TC fight.

When Muhammad Ali, sitting at ringside, was told that Zanon would still be higher than Ali in the March rankings, he said, Zanon's a chump! This is a joke! Where's DFO? Where Gandalf? Tell those Bozos to explain to me how this fool is ahead of me in the rankings?! This is ridiculous!

TBF Commissioners DFO and Gandalf were unavailable for comment at press time.

Re: Transcontinental Boxing Federation

FRIDAY NIGHT FIGHTS:

#4 Fritz Chervet D12 #8 Joey Olivo [Flyweights, 12 rounds]
A strategic, evenly matched, low excitement fight. For a while, it looked as though Chervet wouldn't last the distance, as his right eye began swelling in the 6th round, and he got a bad gash over his left in the 7th. But the referee let the fight continue, and whatever drama was lacking in the ring was more than made up for on the scorecards. The fight was Olivo's for the taking after 11, but exhausted, he was outworked by Chervet who earned the second draw in TBF history. 116-114 113-117 115-115.

#3 Abe Attell W12 (unan) #9 Solly Smith [Featherweights, 12 rounds]
A superb defensive fight by Smith, who although he didn't land many big shots, did nullify a great many of Smith's punches. He couldn't nullify Smith's elbows, however; after multiple warnings, Smith lost a point as early as the third for his dirty tactics. Attell was still quite fresh after 12 rounds. Not clear what fight one of the judges was watching. 117-110 114-113 118-109

#2 Gervonta "Tank" Davis TKO 7 #6 Jim Watt [Lightweights, 12 rounds]
Tank Davis dropped Jim Watt in the 2nd round for a 5-count, but the gritty Scotsman got up and proceeded to win the 3rd and 4th rounds. He also suffered a bad gash over his right eye in the second, and it was reopened in the 6th, at which point the referee was looking very closely and warned his corner that if they couldn't stop the bleeding, it might not go much longer. With Watt winning the 7th round, the cut reopened, and a bitterly disappointed Watt was the TKO loser at the 1:54 mark. Had he gone on to win the round, as was likely, he would have led on one card and trailed by just a point on another.
59-55 57-57 58-56 at the time of stoppage.

Jeff Chandler (Champion) KO 7 #9 Hurricane Teru [Bantamweights, 15 round title defense]
As expected, Jeff Chandler had no problem defending his title against the #9 contender Teru, who was dropped in the 4th for a 5-count, and in the 7th for the full 10, being counted out at 2:08. Scorecards at time of stoppage: 60-53 60-54 58-55
