See, it's stories like this that make me believe sometimes people don't actually know that the things they take have illegal substances in it. Never once have I read the ingredients of a medicine bottle except to make sure it didn't contain peanuts (which they never will), and I'm sure I've taken a lot of things on there, over the counter or otherwise, that could have gotten me suspended. Furthermore, if I have a nutritionist or a trainer, yes... I trust what they ask me to put in my body (given some research, but not on the level of comparing it to a list).

I mean, has anyone here ever actually seen the list of banned substances? Go ahead and have a look, it's covered in a few sections...

Spoiler

Have fun!

Re: MLB Off-Topic

I saw it and immediately LOLed. A-Rod's first excuse in 09 was an over the counter drug in the DR that he "didn't know had an illegal substance in it". Call me cynical, but I'd put my money on he's lying. I don't disagree that it's difficult to check the list, but if your job is your body, then you have to do it or have someone else do it. It's no different than an IT guy installing a program that puts a virus on your computer, he didn't create it but it was his job to make sure it didn't happen in the first place. Either guilty by default or guilty by negligence.

I'm not saying I believe all of them, but I believe Raul Mondesi (if that's all he's put in his body and that substance pops up in the medicine). Guillermo Mota was under the same issue, though his was a second offense.

The ingredients in a medicine or drug could easily be cross referenced with this list...

...and the MLB / MLBPA should create and maintain a comprehensive list of OTC products that will lead to a failed test.

Why hasn't this been done, I wonder...

Re: MLB Off-Topic

Even better, the suspension was reduced because he proved that the medicine had the substance in it, not that he took the medicine. So theoretically he could've been taking it, found a medicine with it in there (or had one all along), and then when he got popped just give them the bottle. Also this is partially the idea behind the gummies at Biogenesis, they were supposed to be untraceable and when caught, Melky just made up a medicine. He could be innocent, but even if he is, putting yourself in this position in this year earns the suspension regardless, gotta be much smarter. And if he isn't innocent, then he's very smart in acting stupid and playing the fool.

I don't know. I mean yes, it is easy to cross-reference, and I get what DHYF was saying about how as a professional athlete you should be reading these things, but the point I was making about the peanuts thing is as much as I scrutinize what I have to look for that could end my life if consumed, I sometimes won't go as far as to read certain things as well.

I mean, food at a restaurant can have these things, man. I don't suppose he'll personally ask for the manager to see if his steak was prepared first by injecting the steer with Furfenorex.

I agree with this.

I'm not saying he shouldn't have been suspended. I just think this can happen accidentally, too.

Re: MLB Off-Topic

I think agents and minor league organizations should drill the PED list into players early on--at least emphasize the need to cross-reference products with it. There should be some sort of orientation if there isn't already. This won't eliminate the issue, but it might cut down on some of the ignorance. And, let's be honest, since there is a loss of pay tied to suspensions, shouldn't agents really be taking the lead on this? I bet some already do (say what you will about him, but imagine Scott Boras not educating his clients about this stuff).

Re: MLB Off-Topic

I see that Brycey wanted to bring more fun into the game. Maybe he just should have told the ump that that was the only reason he came back onto the field.

Rotoworld:

Bryce Harper has been suspended one game after he returned to the field following his ejection on Monday.

Harper was booted from Monday's game against the Tigers after arguing a called third strike on Danny Espinosa from the dugout. That will happen sometimes. Had the matter ended there, he probably wouldn't have been suspended. The slugger returned to the field and was caught yelling profanities at home plate umpire Brian Knight after Clint Robinson hit a walk-off home run, though, which led to the suspension. Players are not allowed to come back onto the field after an ejection. Harper is appealing and will play until that appeal is heard. In addition to the one-game suspension, Harper has also been fined an undisclosed amount.
