Re: 2017 Offseason Thread

Good read on Andre Iguodala's FA process this past summer and how he almost left to join the Rockets:

Def worth a read.

Signing Bogut makes sense. He's a cheaper option than Mozgov was and probably a better player. With Lopez you can play 5 out and stretch the floor and with Bogut you can have somebody to man the middle. He's a decent passer as well, averages around 3 assists per 36.

Lopez is still better used around the basket and in PnR. Don't let last year confuse you because if you're just going to keep him out on the perimeter, might as well move him now.

Re: 2017 Offseason Thread

Despite all the other rumors surrounding them all summer, they actually had a really good off-season.

If Rose, Green, Crowder can be more consistent options than what Deron, Frye, and Derrick were they’ve already upgraded.

Considering they weren’t going to be able to fix their defensive issues in one offseason I think they did about as good of a job as possible here. Crowder can come in and guard the quicker wings, LeBron move to the 4’s, and Thompson the stretch 5’s. Would be better than what they had last year.

Big question is will they still fall off the face of the earth when LeBron sits. I don’t know how much of that was Kyrie going iso on his own, or Lue just not having anything else to run.. Maybe with Kyrie out the ball will move a little with these newer guys. If nothing else they can slow the pace and play through Love to keep the other side from doing too much damage too quickly.

It’ll be interesting to see when IT gets healthy how he meshes with them. I don’t think he’s the player Kyrie is but he could end up a better fit for Cleveland. I think he’ll dribble less, move the ball better, and he likes to get himself to the line which is better considering he lacks the size to take contested step backs all game like Kyrie.. Thinking on all those times he got doubled on those P-n-R plays in Boston, that’s probably not going to happen with LeBron or Love setting those screens rather than guys like Crowder or Johnson. Maybe cleaner looks for him, and more touches for the other guys as well.

The biggest question mark here is Jeff Green. He just turned 30 and should be in what would be his prime years. But he’s bounced around and been worthless as of late. If he can play the way he did a couple seasons ago, attack, a good enough shooter that you have to stay honest, defend two positions at a solid rate, he could be a big addition. Theoretically a younger, longer, version of what Jefferson is. But if not, it’ll be another wasted Derrick Williams type of signing.

Woah woah let's not talk about Frye in the past tense. If he ever leaves then Road Trippin would never be the same.

Outside of Thomas and Crowder, they brought in a bunch of washed has beens.

To say they had a "really good" offseason is overstating it just a bit. But it's also better than them just standing pat so I'll give them credit for that.

Well yeah, I’m typing that assuming Thomas will end up being fine like he says he will be. You can’t lose Kyrie and not get back an All-Star level guy and expect to still be good.

But otherwise I guess it just depends on what your definition of a good off-season would be. They’ve been to 3 straight finals, aside from bringing in a 4th all-star level guy there is only so many ways to see improvement. Their starting 5 was a top 5 team in the league at +/-, points, threes, assists, rebounds, forcing turnovers, steals..

Their biggest issues are the defense needs work, they are old and slow against teams that can spread you out, and they are horrible when LeBron goes to the bench. So bad that back in March this past year the teams Net Rating when he sat was twice as bad as the Lakers.

If Crowder, Green, Rose, give them more athletic options than Deron, Jefferson, Frye, they’ve already upgraded as far as being more athletic, if lineups with Crowder in allow them to defend small ball rotations, or even Green in place of Frye, they improved there, and if they can get a more collective effort to not collapse with LeBron off the floor they’ve improved there too.

It’s not often you can improve on all of your weaknesses in one off-season. Yeah some of these guys are “washed”, but it’s not like they are having to beat out guys who weren’t. I’ll be shocked if Rose isn’t better than Deron playing with LeBron and Co, Green is a bigger question mark but if he’s more reliable than Derrick Williams, and can help defend against lineups that Frye is to slow to stay on the court against that’s an upgrade regardless of how washed he is.
