For instance, I'm pretty sure the LJ four-point play got, like, one or two sentences and that was about it.

I kind of wonder if that book would have been better off with a narrower scope (say, the Riley era only), which would have allowed for more concentrated depth rather than, "And then this happened. And this. And here's another section on Anthony Mason. And then this."

I agree. I’m starting When the Garden Was Eden now, and I think one advantage it has over Blood in the Garden is every Knicks fan knows everything about the 90s Knicks whereas a lot of us probably know a lot less about the 70s teams.

There’s some anecdotes every once in a while where we didn’t know the specifics or you give a little “hmm that’s cool” but not a ton of new information. And Herring was a really great beat writer for the Knicks so that kinda adds to the disappointment. I think the biggest problem is you’re writing a book about an era basically defined by a single person, and you don’t have access to The Rat to bring everything full circle. It’s a lot of talking around him or trying to figure out his way of thinking through Checketts quotes, I think it would’ve been a lot better if he’d had that access, he’s basically the star of the book.

As true as that fact is (and Bobans career high in rebounds is less than Muggsys), you also have to factor in minutes played. Muggsy played over 2500 mins per season. Boban had played around that many minutes TOTAL in his career.

Yeah, Goes without saying. I’m sure he knew that when he posted it.

I actually didn’t know he averaged an o board a game though, that’s pretty impressive, lol

What I want to know now is if there are any 7 footers who played over 2000 mins in a season and averaged less rebounds in a season than Muggsys best.

Stats say otherwise but I refuse to believe Chris Bosh didn’t those years he just refused to even try to rebound with Miami lol.

Re: NBA Off Topic Thread

On the topic of late 90s / early 00s basketball style vs today, let me steal a line from Kenny Smith.

The NBA is a copycat league. So no matter what era you’re in, you see a lot of predictable outcomes because you see everybody trying to do the same stuff.

If this Gobert/ Towns pairing works, it will be interesting to see if other teams try to duplicate it. People claim that the Warriors created this 3 point barrage but Golden State offense has shot a bunch of mid ranges and ran different actions. It’s just other teams shoot 3s with a lot less creativity than the Warriors.

Also if we’re going to evaluate peak late 90s/early 00s, we need to focus on the West and not the East. The last time the East had real depth before this past season was probably 1997 when it had 6 teams win 54 games or more.
