It has nothing to do with the connection of the speed. It's about floating point computations if you really must know (I'm not an engineer so I can't get into specifics but this is about as generalized as I can get)

ribbitt, you seem like you know what you're talking about here, and I appreciate your insight. Are you 100% sure it can't be done though? Remember, if anyone could pull it off, it would be VC...they've had an online football game for like 3 years now. While others are playing catch up, I guess I'm just wishful thinking that VC could've been figuring out a way to make it happen. I've got some buddies who have a ps2/broadband, and I think it would be great to be able to get some ESPN in with them.

Like I said, I trust what you're saying...I'm just holding out hope that you're only 99.9% sure.

Re: Could ESPN 2k4\'s secret be Xbox vs PS2 online play

I remember reading this as well. The EE in the PS2 is not an IEEE-certified CPU while the Pentium and the PowerPC in the Xbox and GC are. I'm sure they could add a layer of code to make communications work but it would enact a performance penalty, even if that layer could even be run on the limited RAM of the consoles.

But beyond this technical obstacle, XBL is a closed network. MS would no more allow online games between XBL and PS2 players than AOL allowed other instant messaging clients to work on the AIM network. For that matter, MS would not allow EA or any other publisher to set up servers to support their XBL games independently of XBL. Yes I know Xbox Connect and Gamespy Tunnel lets you play online independently of XBL but I think MS would react differently if a high-profile publisher like EA or Sega attempted to do that.

I thought he said it would be something totally new gameplay wise, this xbox/ps2 online wouldn't be anything really new...I mean, it's just playing people online, which we could already do, except for it is more people to play.

While I agree that Live is much better, as far as speed goes, for me PS2 online was as fast as Xbox Live. As long as you avoid anyone with a connection that says something worse than good.

Plus, in broadband only games like Socom, I'd say lag is much less of an issue than in RTCW and Ghost Recon. Xbox Live is much better than PS2 Online in most ways, but I don't think speed is really one of them.
